I going to ask a question that I'm sure everyone except me knows, so be nice. I need to change gear oil in the rear end. I don't see a drain plug. So I assume that the cover must be removed from the the rear end. My question is this: does the cover need a gasket or do you just use silicon gasket material? My truck is a early 1999, F250 4X4. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shrug.gif Thanks

Use silicon gasket material. And yes the cover must be removed. I have a PML diff cover on mine and it has a drain plug. My oil had been in place for 75,000miles and i changed it and the magnet on the drain plug kept the oil really really clean, so i recomend one. You can check them out here. www.yourcovers.com

What Wells said, and a little hint: Leave the top two bolts in but back out about 1/2".... when the dif cover pops loose, the oil won't Gush out, as the cover falls off, tipping over the bucket/pan, slobber'n oil all over you and the floor... startle'n you, make'n you jerk'n smack yer head on something under the truck.

FYI I used redline 75W140NS gear oil which contains no friction mofifier for the limited slip in mine. I did not any modifier at all and my limited slip unit feels like new again. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smokin.gif

Also check the vent tube for clogging. Sometimes spiders, etc. get in there. A guy here had it clogged and blew out a axle seal.

Blow the line out if you can or reem it with a wire.

I had to put additive in from Ford as mine was shuttering bad on cornering. Cleared it right up. The clucthes were sticking and by adding the additive it lets them slip better.
