Pulled into a local truck stop today to get fuel today. Pulled back in the truckers lane and saw two different pumps, one said reg diesel and had the larger truck nozzle, then the pump next to it said high quality diesel and it had the smaller nozzle that I need. The difference was .10 cents per gallon. No other differences that I could tell. Asked the guy inside and as far as he knew they were pumped from the same tank, so why should they be charging more just because of the size of the nozzle??? They only had one of these high quality pumps , but had 19 of the reg diesel pumps.
I just hold the nozzle up to my inlet pipe and slow it down when I think I am close. Anybody else ever seen this??

No, I've never seen this before. Maybe it runs through another filter or two before it comes out of the nozzle ??? Did you notice anything special about the pump?

It's been here in NJ for almost 3 years, Gulf has regular diesel and Premium Select diesel, whether or not (2) different tanks, I don't know, I don't use Gulf.

Most Shell stations up here in Ontario sell both regular diesel and Ultra diesel. The fuel comes from the same underground tank. But, if you look at the side of the pump, there is a tank of additive. When you select the "Ultra" button, the pump meters in the right amount of additive as you dispense the fuel.

As for it making any difference........ I don't know.

Hmm. Could be road tax.

Here in Oregon, most deisel is advertised at truck stops with the PUC price. Add $0.24/g for road tax. If you pull & and fuel a pickup, you need to tell the atendant that it's non-PUC & they'll set the computer to add the tax.

Conoco "Super Diesel" has added lubricity, anti-gel, anti-foam and another thing or two. It does not have a higher Cetane number. You can get the same results by using Stanadyne, or a similar product, for about the same (or less) cost per gallon. Most of the additives you can add yourself, also claim to raise the Cetane number. I use the "Super Diesel" frequently, and also add Stanadyne Performance Formula'. I have never been able to conclude any positive results in any way, but will continue to use it. It makes ME feel good, and that's what it's all about. Right?

You're driving a 2000 in your sig. I have a 2000 and I don't have any problem using the larger nozzles at the truck stops. I haven't done anything to mine, it's the same as when I bought the truck new. I don't understand why you too can't use the larger hoses????

Mine has the smaller nozzle that the big rig nozzles won't fit into. I think they changed this sometime in 2000 mine is a early model with abuild date of 9/99.
I use powerservice on every fill up too. I cannot find stanadyne in my area or I would try it. I didn't notice any extra filters on the pump, the only diff I saw was the size of the nozzle???

Haven't I read here somewhere that you can do something or other to the nozzle to open it up??? I know when I'm traveling, especially when I'm pulling the trailer, I would much rather pull up with the big rigs and fill up. There's so much more room to manuver around with the camper and if I had the small opening, I know I wouldn't be able to go in that area. I also wonder when that opening was changed to the large one as my truck has a build date of 12/99??? I'm sure glad they did though.
I haven't run accross any of the high quality diesel around me, I guess people here are just trying to afford the "reg" stuff before trying the "quality" stuff!!! I sure wouldn't bother. I too use diesel additive already and can put it in by myself cheaper than paying for "quality" diesel.

If you have the small hole, just disconnect the filler neck from the back of the plate and die grind, dremel or sawzall the opening larger, flush the particles away with water and reconnect. The 10 mins you spend doing that will be made up in 2 or 3 tank fills. When I use the larger hose/nozzle, I can't even clean my windshield before the tank is filled up.

NCHornet, it is about a two hour job to get the big rig results. Three screws and two hose clamps is all that holds the filler neck on. Or stuff a rag down the filler hack saw out the guts and shop vac out any debris and enjoy.
