Remove exhaust manifold to remove head?

1718 Views 6 Replies 3 Participants Last post by  xtremefreerider
My ford factory manual says to remove right exhaust manifold to pull the heads.
Is this necessary or can i just yank the heads out with a cherry picker with the exhaust manifolds attached?

Thanks-----Robert

I believe if your doing the head removal with engine in the truck removal of the pax E manifold would make it easier. You will have to play with the push rods at the back, using a rubber band hold the one(s) you cannot remove suspended in place when you remove the head.

I bet I can just pull the AC evaporator cover off to get more access there. I did that a few weeks ago to do the valve stem seals. Pushrods pulled right out. Probably make it a bit easier to get to those back bolts too.

Back when I was younger, I would have done it that way, but these days a cherry picker is a must, unless I want to become a permanant fixture in the engine compartment /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/eek.gif
