Hello, folks! I'm usually over on the Superduty boards, but am asking a question here for my brother.

He has a '96 7.3L with AC that locked the compressor, bent the compressor shaft or pulley, and broke the belt. He's not real interested in AC anyway, and would like to eliminate the compressor. How much trouble would it be to configure the serpentine belt to non-AC routing, and what parts would be needed? I know sometimes alternators and PS pumps are in different places, etc., but I'm not sure about this engine.

Many thanks! Regan

Rather than remove the A/C why not make an air co
mpresser out of it?

If I remember right, if AC wasn't used, they used an idler pulley in place of the compressor. Same belt, same routing. The pulley bolts onto the compressor mount.

Prior to replaceing my AC, I took a look at alternatives. I have seen an idler pully that bolts in place of the compressor. I might have found it in one of the auto parts stores website- not sure....
Seemed like the part was up around $100.

I lost my idler pulley due to a wiped bearing. I did manage to bypass the pulley, but also had to bypass the vacuum pump, plus shim the alternator up a bit with the backseat hold-down nuts. It got me down the road to a repair shop.

Not the solution you are looking for but it takes some creativity and possibly a shorter belt to get it done.

Good luck!

Gentlemen,

Thanks very much for the suggestions! I looked around, and found an "AC bypass pulley" at a local Autozone for $40. That should make him happy! I never would have known such a thing existed without your help. I am always amazed at the information and helpful spirit to be found on this board.

Take care, and thanks again! Regan
