I have owned a 2001 F250,CC, SB, 4x4, 7.3, auto since new. 133,000 trouble free miles on the engine. I did rebuild the tranny and, and have done Unit Bearings and Ball Joints

It is my daily driver. I had a Lance Camper and now have an Artic Fox that weighs about 3,100 pounds. I also occasionally tow a flat bed with Jeep behind the camper. I have air bags and camper springs.

My concern is stopping. New Trucks have much better brakes, trannies and exhaust brakes. Not to mention being quieter and new. I have recently replaced the door lock actuators, and a window rail.

Is it worth replacing with a new truck?? Thanks

I wouldn't if all your concerned about is braking. By now I'm sure you have adjusted your driving style to compensate for Fords "bad brakes".

Sure the new ones are quiet, but that's what the volume knob is for on the radio. Your truck is paid for I would guess, but if you can swing the down and payments, then go for it.

Asking a bunch of people who have no idea what your personal situation/finances are, and have no REAL idea what shape your current vehicle is in, will invite lots of different responses. In the end only YOU can decide.

Look at it this way, can you afford a $1000+ a month payment even with 0 down and 0% interest rate?

I personally would keep the 01 as long as it does what you want it to do and put some money into it to fix it up a little and still be money ahead.

Granted the new trucks are nice and they are quiet but they come with their own set of problems and the way that the new vehicles are you can forget about doing any work on them yourself unless you really want to.

I just purchased a 2016 Explorer and after looking under, around, and into the engine compartment I figure that my mechanic is going to get a lot of work besides oil changes. Not to mention what the dealer mechanics are going to be working on if anything goes wrong in the 5 years of my bumper to bumper.

Replace a 7.3 with new 6.7?

+1 at keeping the old girl.

Why going from a truck that you know you don't have much issue with and if something comes up its not a big bill to fix to a truck that will cost you lost of money / month to pay and taking the chance to get one with or without issue. Also that the issue knows are really expensive and sometimes cheaper to get a new engine (witch is not cheap at all)...

I would just upgrade your 01 with better brake, do the door seal mod and snowman mod. Those will put you under 1000$, better braking and quiet the cab

Just my opinion

$60.000 buys a lot of brakes. I have been contemplating upgrading too. I never buy new anyway, just because I have a hard time throwing away 20% of the retail price. But with the expense of repairs on the new ones I can't bring myself to get rid of my old faithful, loud, diesel smelling, smoking, (did I say loud)paid for, 243K mile truck. It still gets the job done and I still like the old body style. Not as many of them around these days, but I still get offers to sell. Anything that breaks on my truck is cheap compared to a 6.7. I know. I know! If I drove a 6.7 I'd be all impressed with the power, the quiet, etc. But if I want power and all that I get in my Cadillac CTS V!

If you can handle $10k plus repair bills on denied or post warranty that's one thing. You can make a 7.3 quite. Mine measured at center seat warmed up is only 3 decibels louder than a 6.7 ( it's the truth boys )
If you decide to sell your truck you will get a premium amount matching it's condition.
If you buy a 6.7 the bottom will fall out so buy a year old off lease auction purchase the dealer made and slapped a certified warranty on it that they buy from ford mo credit. You will at least save the first hard hit.

Thanks for all the posts. I am keeping my truck. I drive an old '84 Scrambler as my off road vehicle. Yes new ones do some things better, but my old Scrambler works great, paid for, and gets more attention then anything new. My 16 year old son, who rode home from hospital in this truck, says keep it. I looked at new trucks today (all brands), and all the salesman were talking about my 7.3. I am luck to have it.

What brake upgrades work ( 2001 F250, 4WD)? I have a DP Tuner controller, and use the "exhaust brake" setting down hills. Really helps. Want to keep me, family, and public safe. I haul and tow heavy loads.at times.

Thanks.

I'm sure you haul heavier than just that Arctic Fox, right? It isn't heavy by any means. Previous fiver was 11,500 dry and current is 7980 dry.

Apparently the powerstop rotor with hawks pads is a really good option. Never tried them myself but that what I'll install next

Friend had a V10 350 bought a 6.7 ( he's a gas mechanic he he he. He's been getting his rude awakening). He gave me a set of those Powerstops he had been going to put on his truck. I put them on sets of Napa coated and they are without a doubt the best pads I've had on my truck. The rotors are regular old rotors but dipped in an anticorossion antisieze and wax? To help keep rust out of cooling passages and the hub so it's definitely those Powerstops.

There are ways to lesson the noise just takes some time, money and research. You can also upgrade the breaks some. But I am a tight ass and like my money to stay in the bank. I would stay with old faithful and start putting payments in the bank till I have the money to pay cash for a good used 6.7 down the road. Let some other sucker pay all the money up front.

You can get 6.7s dirt cheap. Know a guy who just bought a 14 Lariat with 120k for $7k.
It spun a bearing... Big surprise. He's going to buy a short block and put it on the road. Looks like a brand new truck.
You can get ones that has not broken yet from a year old that's certified way less than new and once it spins a bearing or snaps a crank you can buy one for around $7 k if it only needs a short lock. If it needs more,,. You get the picture.
