I need to replace only one injector, (7.3L cylinder# 5) ... Any advise on how to do or how this would differ from doing all 4 or 8. I am concerned about fuel and oil in the cylinder and how to remove to prevent hydro lock, All a little new to me, I have read several posted instructions on doing All of them and as I am getting it straight in my head, the draining of the fuel and oil has me a little confused. Thanks

Most people simply let the oil/fuel drain into the cylinder by removing the injector AND glowplug, and remove the oil by installing the injector (leave glowplug out) and rotate the engine BY HAND 2 revolutions. Since you only have 1 cylinder, just rotate until the oil squirts out of the glowplug, then give a few rotations with the starter. If you leave the block connector on the valve cover unplugged, you don't have to worry about it starting. After you cranked a few revolutions, replace the glowplug and button it up. When you try starting it, you might make sure it's outside and the wind isn't blowing towards the house. It's going to belch copious amounts of white stinky smoke and buck and kick for a few minutes.

so I understand this ...?????

Thanks for your reply...." I am getting there " !! So the oil/fuel will only drain into that cylinder where the injector is removed ???? What is the plug at the back side of the head for ? does that drain the entire cylinder head ?

Yes, oil/fuel will only drain into the cylinder that you pulled the injector. The plug(s) on the ends of the heads are the oil and fuel galley plugs, and that is how they machine the heads when they are made, so plugs on each end. You can remove them if you want, and the majority of the oil and fuel will come out of their respective galleys and drain out the back. It can be a bear to work back there though.

I just removed the glow plugs from the cylinders I replaced injectors in, and bump the starter to clear the cylinder. While you're in there, I'd suggest replacing the glow plugs with genuine Motorcraft ones.

DON'T just bump the starter. There can be enough oil in there to at least make a BIG mess when it blows out of the glow plug hole. It could also possibly damage something.

DEFINITELY rotate it 2 revs by hand first. And even better, get a suction pump (under $10 at the parts store) and suck as much out of the cylinder before installing the injector. Getting the bulk of oil and fuel out before turning the engine keeps oil from winding up in the exhaust manifold and smoking out the whole neighborhood.

You can also drain the oil gallery by removing two small plugs inside the valve cover before pulling the injector. They are very small allen plugs, and can be a PITA to remove, but if you do, you'll minimize the amount of oil that gets in the cylinder.

You say this like thats a bad thing :icon_rolleyes:

Definitely crank over by hand until you get oil/fuel to spurt out, then make sure BOTH SIDES injectors are disconnected before you try cranking over with the key. The engine will start with just 1 bank connected.
