Yes, I could do a search, but I know you guys will chime in.

Not for MY truck - brother's. Stick shift!!

Can a backyard mechanic replace the clutch on our trucks? Easy? Hard? Take it to a Shop?

If shop, know a good one in or around Marysville, Washington (Everett?)

THANKS A BUNCH!!!

Need help. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/eek.gif

Hey DslLvrLdy!

Lura, right???

The job is not different than any other clutch swap other than that the trannies in these trucks are bigger and heavier. If he has a 4wd, the t-case has to come down with or separated from the tranny. The t-case is also just like any other, just bigger and heavier.

He also needs to decide whether to swap to the SMFW setup. If he does that, the kit comes with a new flywheel so there won't be any down time, just remove and reinstall.

I live just a little north of Marysville and can be of some help if time allows... gearing up for a remodel project that will keep me busy!

If he has specific questions, I can give him my phone number via PM...

My $0.02

God Bless,

Hey Lura!

Most people upgrade to the Single Mass FlyWheel setup. Ford had a two piece flywheel that had spring dampners between the two-pieces to, well, dampen the roughness of the diesel. Not sure if it was NVH concern or jarring affect on the tranny. The SMFW setup uses a dampend clutch disk like a normal clutch.
Cost is the other issue.... standard Luk SMFW setup runs $500-600, I understand the flywheel only from Ford is $900-1,000...

Does your brother have 4wd and does he have a place to work?

PM on the way...

Okay! Here goes --- FIRST, I absolutely cannot THANK YOU enough, Tim. I feel like a sitting duck down here in Utah at times, and you guys up there on the Coast of Washington have been the greatest bunch of guys I know of!!

Thank you so very much for jumping in here. I should have posted this over the weekend, but just put off trying to bug you guys up there.

He had a shop recommended to him by one of his good buddies, and somehow got the truck over there, and they are working on it as we speak. He is a Pilot car driver, and without his truck, he is out of work!!

THANK YOU SO VERY MUCH!!! I owe you!!!!!!!!! (Send phone number anyway!)

As we speak, clutch is being fixed by a great shop in Arlington. $250 for flywheel (the new single-style one); $750 for clutch assembly; and $50/labor . I'll vote for that!!

Thanks, Guys!!!!!

My brother can drive just about anything - and he was able to get this to the garage without using the clutch. Nifty if you know how to do it. Can shift on rpm's. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/eek.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/biggrin.gif He is a special guy, and I am, of course, MOST proud of him!!! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smokin.gif

ouch!!! i don't know about the super duty tranny's, but i know that the OBS manual tranny's do not take well to shifting without the clutch. my brother did it in mine when i bought it and then the next thing i know it was grinding gears. had to take it to the tranny shop. not to say that your brother isn't a good driver because you do have to be pretty good to shift with out using the clutch.

That sounds like you got a great price. When I did mine it was $650 for all the parts and I did the labor.

As far as shifting goes I shift mine all the time w/o the clutch and without grinding.

Downshifting is harder to time everything and sometimes I will grind a little then, but for the most part it is just like any other big truck.
