So i got a call this week to do a boat delivery down to new york from cape cod. its a wednesday trip so i decided to give everything a once over since this is my first long distance trip in a while and wanted to make sure i didn't have any surprises. well to my surprise i found oil all over the front of the oil pan. its leaking from the dipstick gasket.
I have already paid a shop to fix it once (alittle over a year ago) so i'm going to try and guilt tripping them into fixing in before i go on wednesday afternoon. the new gasket they had put on was pushed out when they tightened the nut and split, so getting the old one off won't be hard.
I'm wondering if its possible to loosen the nut and get enough space to slide the new one down the dipstick tube and stretch it over the nut then tighten it all back up.
the job cost me $450 bucks the first time because they went all over the motor from the turbo down trying to find it, so there was alot of unneeded labor. has anybody been able to do it or try it this way without removing the nut completely? the rubber seems pretty stretchy so it seems like you could work it around the nut without splitting or tearing it.
thanks for you advice, the service center opens at 7, so i'll be on the phone bright and early.
