when I start my truck up in the morning(about 60* here) it seems like it starts pretty rough and knocks hard at idle. Then when I go to drive it its runs rough and blows a descent amount of white smoke and can hardly reach 30 mph. Once it starts to warm up a little(maybe a minute of driving) it runs great and theres no white smoke. Also I noticed just a little before it reachs operating temp while idling it will huff white smoke and when I give it throttle Ill get a small ploom and then it clears up while im cruising.

My only mods are a 4 inch straight pipe, with a stock tune.

thx or any help.

It turned out to be the FICM on mine. Mine is an 05 with 135000 miles, 217000 kms here in canada. It was difficult to start cold and smoked like a baXXXXX when it was cold .Still smoked a little when completely warmed up.The FICM wasn't putting out enough voltage to the injectors when the oil was cold and thick to fire them properly.Mine has been great since and have noticed a good increase in power and fuel economy.Hope this helps.

Hey I have a diesel 03 excursion, I noticed when in warmer temps, I don't get any puffs of white smoke at my morning start, But when it's colder 40 degrees & lower it will puff a small amount white smoke when I start it in the morning. My friend works at the ford dealer and said that small amount of smoke in colder weather is normal?

My truck does the same thing barely starts in the morning or after a few hours of sitting and it always runs like a** only cruising i can find smooth spots but if it shifts and drops rpms it goes to buckin and i gotta back off or floor it to make it stop also dont mean to change subject or ne thing but it also overheats and pukes coolant when im in town doin stop and go driving with the a/c on and sometimes with a/c off could this be all one thing causing the problems i heard injector cups could cause these symptoms but i figure maybe a few injectors and a thermo hopefully not h/gs any ideas from yall are great cuz im a do it myselfer

silver 6.0 doesnt sound like a bad FICM or it woudl do it all the time. Possibly a couple bad injectors or low fuel pressure, have you changed your fuel filters in a while?

Let me ask you this, have you recently changed the oil? OR changed brands of oil. I had this problem and it did it for about 2 weeks after I changed oil brands from Ford Powerstroke to Rotella. Both are 15-40 but for some reason my truck didnt like the Rotella for a couple weeks. I have used Ford Powerstroke oil in mine since new but it had gotten up to 3.50/quart and so I changed to Rotella as I can get it for about 2.65 per quart and even less when on sale. I think it has something to do with oil viscosity as when warmed up it is probably a little thinner and the injectors seem to work better. Just a theory. I also changed both fuel filters at this same time so not sure if I had a little air in my lines, or if I had a fuel pressure issue either. It has cleared up and completely stopped.

SOFLASMOKER = it sounds like you have an EGR issue or worse yet, head gasket problem. Overheating, puking coolant, white smoke, sounds like you better get that fixed right away, you are going to eat up some injectors pumping water and when you floor it/WOT you are increasing the cylinder pressure which is probably causing the excessive smoke and roughness as you are getting all kinds of strange pressures in the engine and it is going bonkers trying to figure out what to do with itself.

searcyfarms- thanks for the info i was hoping it wasnt h/gs and i know 100% its not an egr cooler problem cuz i dont have one lol the only thing that puzzles me is there is not coolant in my oil or tailpipe and i have no oil in my coolant and the smoke is a blueish and deffinatly raw fuel smell

My fuel filters were replaced 1700 miles ago so that can't be it.

But I think your right about the oil change. Changed oil about 700 miles ago and it started running like **** in the morning almost immediately after. I've been letting it warm up every morning since then, so tomorrow Ill go and drive it without letting it sit and warm up and see what happends.

The whole white smoke issue when warm has been going on for a while so that can't be solely from the oil. I spoke to a diesel tech about it and he thinks its most likely the FICM.
