Hey all,

It seems like the truck is acting up at startup on most mornings or after it has set for a while. It cranks fine and fires up fairly quick, but after that it fluctuates in RPM, up and down about 3 times, then it levels out and works fine for the rest of the day.

Anybody know what might be going on??

Thanks in advance

If you are only talking about a few RPMs mine does the same thing I don't think you have anything to worry about.

Oh a couple hundred RPMs that is quite a bit when I start mine you can see the needle move but only a very little bit. This is a guess but could your HPOP res be low and when it starts it doesn't have enough oil to keep it going at a steady RPM.

You may need to run it on a scanner at startup & read the ICP pressure....

Also , unplug the ICP & see if it has oil leaking from it.....

Try leaving it unpluged ans see if it changes anything.

OK, went and tried to start it up. Seems to be doing this pretty consistently now. Unplugged ICP sensor and it started up just fine. Of course it gives me the service engine light, but I think that's just because I had it unplugged.

So, does this mean I got a bad sensor?

Thanks

Without a scanner ,Its either the ICP sensor Or the IPR...
The ICP is the cheaper of the two....

Did we ask how old the oil was & if it was full?...

The oil is new. Just changed it a couple days ago. I added some of that Lucas Oil Stabalizer and have checked the oil, right at full.

The only other thing I've done is install an edge evolution programmer. Is that something that could have caused this? I used the programmer and probably put 400 miles on the truck before this started.

TIA

I guess I'll start out replacing the IPC sensor and resealing the IPR. It doesn't look like resealing the IPR is too difficult. Probably go ahead and get a international blue CPS and install that while I'm at it.

Hopefully that'll do it.

Thanks for the tech help

Make sure you do one thing at a time, so you will know what fixed it....If you pull the IPR make sure you clean it at the same time...

Curious. What brand and weight of oil did you put in? As the other guy said. Get rid of the oil additives. You are just asking for trouble with them in this engine.

When you pull out the IPR, take it apart on a really clean, big and low surface, parts are really small and their goal in life is to disappear.
