I'm looking to change my ratio and have a bad slip clutch pack.
Should I pay to have my gears changed or shop at the auto yards?
How can I tell I'm not buying a worn out unit?
How can I tell if I am buying a Ford ring and pinion setup and not someones aftermarket lower quality mistake?

thanks.

If you're shopping at a wrecking yard, ask to see photos of the truck it came out of. Will show how it got hit and if there might be damage to the axle. Physically check the lash on the pinion, turn the pinion yoke several turns feeling for roughness, and if they'll let you, pull the cover and inspect inside for sparkly lube and chunks. Other than that, it's kind of a pig in a poke.
If yours isn't in bad shape other than the limited slop clutches, you may be in better shape getting yours worked on.

Lash is the amount of twist of pinion before axles starts to move , right?
