When will the recently archived posts be searchable? Any ideas? Maybe if we all emailed Jason it would prod him along to add these to the search database. Naw, nobody deserves that.

I can pretty much assure you that will not get the archives searchable quickly /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

The problem is they are, how shall I say this, frickin' huge (Technical term, I know).

So huge that the Operating System they are on cannot handle the file sizes we are talking about. So, Jason has to work around the OS limits and pull a miracle out of the tailpipe.

It is coming but does take time.

Certain kernel versions and file systems under Linux have a max, single file limit of 2GB. Currently, when Jason tries to create the search indexes for the forums, the process ends up generating files over 2GB. Since that exceeds the OS/file system limits, things crash.

Jason has been working with both a Linux engineer, and the bulletin board software vendor, to get this sorted out.

Jay

[JFS? Just a thought. One of the advantages of running an obsolete OS (OS/2, in my case) is you get to pine after all the "latest" advances. But OS/2 has had JFS (for >2GB filesizes) for years, thought Linux did too /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif]

Anyway, I came along here to complain on this very topic, and I see someone else has already elicited a response, so I can do no better than to say, "ditto".

Went to find info on "deep C6 pan", Google came up with a link to this thread (from Google's cache, of course) but because it's from the cache, I can't read any of the responses to that thread, and can't find the original in the archive -- due to the lack of search facility. ARRRGH!

So, there's probably an answer to my Q, but no easy way to find it at TDS.

Try just a tiny bit harder. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif

Since you know the forum, date, and topic of the thread, it's fairly easy to find it in the archives - because the unindexed archives are in date order.

Go to that forum in the archives - in this case "6.9L diesels 3/01 - 2/05". Then look for that date.

Scroll down to the bottom of the first page in the index and notice a bunch of clickable page numbers. I clicked on page 20 and that was too old. Then worked my way back and clicked on page 14 and hit paydirt. Page 14 of the index included the dates around 9/25/04, so I found that thread. Click on that thread and the topic starter and all replies are right there.

But if you want to get the URL of that thread, to pass it on to someone else, then the one in the address window of your browser won't do it. If you have that thread showing on the screen and right-click on the screen, then click on "properties", a different URL will show up in a new window. But that URL won't work either. I guess because the forum is not indexed?

Frustrating. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif

Thanks for that workaround, as laborious as it is. Here's the thread I wanted.

Your link is to the temporary archives. Those are still indexed, so they are still searchable. But Jason doesn't any longer include them in the forums index, so ordinary users can't bring them up to search them.

How did you get there?

Also if you're using google, and come up with the cached version, why don't you just click on the cached version link which will give you a crude but readable version from what google "Remembers".

You think so? Can you take a minute and write me up a step-by-step? I could find no way to search the "6.9l diesel" archives just prior to Feb-05.

Google found one post -- and I used Google's cache to display it. However, it was displayed collapsed, so I couldn't use Google's cache to view the other posts in the thread.

You gave me the approximate page (14) of threads in which to find it on this site in the archived originals. Then I viewed the thread expanded, and copied out the URL for the lower frame -- this is simple using Mozilla, perhaps not for other browsers, I don't know as I don't use them.

Because Google would only give up the cached copy of a single post, and dead links to the rest of the thread. I spent only two minutes fighting with the URL to fake in enough parameters to try to create the correct links, before I decided the cursing at the darkness was going to be more productive than burning my fingers trying to light more candles.

I don't have a clue. I was hoping you could tell me. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

I've asked Jason if he could add the temporary archives forums back to the forums index page until he gets the search problem fixed on the permanent archives. But don't hold your breath waiting for an answer. He's busier than a one-armed paper hanger because it's the middle of race season for his Hooters race car, plus his day job. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/warmsmile.gif
