Service Engine Soon light on all the time...Banks chip?

I have a 2000 Excursion diesel 4x4 that I bought used about 9 mos ago. The service engine light stayed on all the time and when I took it to the dealer they said this was because there is a Banks chip in it so that light will always be on. They said there is nothing that can be done about this. This doesn't seem right to me. I am getting ready to sell it (not because I don't LOVE it, but I need a crew cab 250 diesel so I can use a cab-over camper to travel with my horses...gosh I will miss it..) and I can't imagine potential buyers would be satisfied with that answer. Also is it possible for us just to take the chip out ourselves? To be honest I don't see what it does that is so great. I drive my sister's F250 2001 diesel all the time and it does not have the chip and feels just fine to me if not even more powerful. We both get about the same mileage as well. Not great! Any ideas, suggestions??? Thanks so much!

I know in our state Ohio they would not have been able to sell you that vehicle since there is an emissions concern. This applies to a DEALERs. That might even fall under the emissions 50k waranty. Have you taken the chip out yet to see if the light goes off?

You should be able to remove the chip with no problems (other than you will lose the power that's been provided by the chip). You should then be able to take it to Autozone and have them scan and clear the SES code. (It woudl be good to know what the code was in the event that you might have an actual problem that the dealer is ignoring because of your chip)

I think I will figure out how to have the chip removed...like I said, I really don't see the benefit, my sister's truck w/o the chip feels great if not more powerful than mine and we both get cruddy mileage, so I think I'd rather be rid of it and have that light off! Maybe I have a faulty chip? What is Autozone? Do you mean take the chip there to have it cleared? Thanks so much!

Autozone is a parts store for cars. They offer a free service of reading/clearing the codes (that cause the check engine light). If you have an OBDII tool you could do it yourself.

Why not just disconnet BOTH batteries for about 30 min. then reconnect the batteries. As long as you don't "drive it like you stold it", the light probably will not come on. What is turning the light on is normally an over boost on the turbo or a high oil pressure on the injector pump. Both of which the chip raises over factory.
