This warning light came on for the first time since I've owned the truck (early 99 with 133K). My Haynes manual says Chapter 2, Service Engine Soon light, see chapter 6....
Chapter 6, Service Engine Soon, see chapter 2"

Is the quickest easiest thing to do to bring it to the dealer and have them read the code?

Thanks,

I also have a 99 with 131k on it and my ses light came on as well. It has come on a few times and has been reset. From what I can tell you will need a scan reader. A few here on the board recommend a autoengunity brand. If you are a do it yorselfer and like to stay out of the dealerships a scanner is a must have. Then do a search on this boar for the scanned code number, then Fix or repaur daily.

Re: service engine soon light

Thanks Crashly.
I assume the 99 PSD is OBD2 (OBDII) compliant?
I guess I'll need to pick up a laptop, too. I only have my work laptop, and I don't have admin rights to load software/hardware.

Call Dennis at ITP Diesel. He sells the AE and could probably steer you in the right direction as far as computers too..

If you plan on coming up to central Cali I could read the codes for you... I will be in Bakersfield next week... let me know.

Or you can buy a used superchips programmer off Ebay, it will read the codes and clear them and it is cheaper than a laptop, although I wouldn't load their tunes on your truck. You can also do like me and get the XCalibrator2 from Jody at DPTuner, you can have any of Jody's tunes put on it and it will read and clear codes and do live data logging with a laptop. Before you add ponies though you need gauges, intake, exhaust etc...
