My new to me 96 F350 has 219000 mi. Bone stock except for intake and straight exhaust (no cat). The previous owner was a maintenance guy; flushed the cooling system more than a few times. Would a coolant filter be worth it at this point? I know its only $100 but not sure the truck would benefit at this point. What do you think?

I'd like to know what you find in the filter after the first change.

Does the casting sand continually wear away over the life of the motor or is the initial residue what circulates until filtered/flushed?

The coolant filter has an additve built into it....its a slow release chemical that keeps the coolant up to snuff in regards to SCA's to help prevent cylinder wall cavitation. Some people have the filter, some people just add the liquid SCA additive which does the same job. I think you are getting confused about what its use is for. Its not used to filter debris out of the cooling system, it just provides a convienient means of adding the chemical to the cooling system and it just happens to look like a filter. There shouldn't be a worry of casting sands in your engine.

Ooops looks like I was confused too. I thought it only conditioned the coolant. I did a little study and it does filter out impurities as well. I just figured the impurities/debris would just settle to the bottom of the rad and engine block. learn something new everyday I guess.

I added the dieselsite coolant filter when I rebuilt the engine at 194,*** miles. Here are some (bad) pictures of the first filter when it was changed at 197,*** miles.

FYI, the filter they sell at the dieselsite is not precharged with coolant additive.
