When I installed my gauges, my boost would hit 14-15 lbs. I removed the red line going to my wastegate and now I can hit 17-18.

Can I tighten the rod on my wastegate to get more boost or am I maxed out because I dont, and probably never will, have a chip?

All those mods and no chip /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shrug.gif whats the point? You can adjust the waste gate its just that you'll never get the performance your looking for with the stock programming. Please dont take what I said in a crappy way, it was not meant that way. I would hate my truck with no chip.

BTW, your boost sounds about right for no chip. Even a 20 or 40HP PCM burn from DP will make your truck run 100% better, and I do mean 100% BETTER!

these guys are right, get a chip or programer, you are all set up for one now. i just did a superchips 1805 power programer on mine, i did the intake first then exhaust then programer really made things just right, its like a different truck now. i know dp tunes are about the best for power increse but the superchips is plenty for me for now. chip it now.you will be very happy.

I would chip it but I really, really, really want this truck to last. I have this truck set up just the way I want it and dont see myself getting another one in the near future. Also, I want to try and keep it as trouble free as I can while I am still making payments.

I know a ton of guys have chipped their trucks and have had no problems. I, on the other hand, think that a chip would just start a domino affect with me.

First it would start with a mild chip, then I would get bored with it and step up to something with more power. I also have a lead foot so that would mean an ATS torque converter or a BTS when I fry the stock tranny and dual HPOP's, injectors, etc. Because once I get the ball rolling it just wont stop.

I think that stuff might be on the wish list but right now, with my outrageous payments, they are totally off limits.

I have fought every bit of temptation to get a chip. It has been tough, believe me.

Adjusting the rod will do you no good since you already have the control line removed.

Wouldnt tightening the control rod prevent the wastegate from being forced open by the turbo instead of the solenoid doing it? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shrug.gif

Boost is irrelevant here anyway, if he is making 16 stock, and squeezes 18 out of it by doing anything, it wont help his power, Your boost numbers sound perfect for a stock truck, so in answer to your Title of the post... No you should not. You need more fuel to make more boost, (They are a direct effect of each other) More fuel in, more power out the exhaust manifolds, to spin the turbo faster,,,making more boost.. Over simplified description I imagine, but the way it works I think.

The boost on my truck is the same as yours. When I first installed my gauges I was worried too because you hear a lot of high boost numbers on this forum due to performance mods (I think). I tested for leaks and checked everything out and decided that hitting 14-16 on a stuck truck is not a problem (my non-professional conclusion).

I know what you mean about chipping your truck. I am resisting the urge also. The main thing that holds me back is that I just got a new transmission and I figure the dealer would void my warranty if I chipped it. It is still very tempting though!!

Would 18 psi be enough to force open the wastegate? If not, then I guess I will have to live with what I got for the next year and a half until the truck is paid off.

If 18 psi will force open the wastegate, what can I do to keep it shut? Thats basically what I am trying to get at.

The wastegate can be forced open with less than 18 lbs of boost. The stock actuator is pretty weak. Wiring the wastegate shut will keep it closed.

Oh, and the mod bug is pretty tough to beat once you get a chip. But you should still get one anyway. C'mon, do it. You know you want to.

Sincerely,
The guy in the red devil outfit that sits on your left shoulder.

Read My sig. The only "real" performance mod I have is the DP tuner chip. I want a turbo, intercooler, injectors, and Big oil just like everyone. But after adding the chip I am completely satisfied with the truck. I will spend my money on building my house than getting all those upgrades, and as long as you read your pyro I dont think you could go wrong: more power, better efficiency. Mine is a work truck and I want it to last, I just got done with payments and I want it to last also but you got to get a chip.

I understand completely, and that is the exact reason I suggested a small level of chip. I started with a TS 6 pos chip, and then went with a Tony Wildman Chip. I needed a compromise before I tore my truck all up from too much fun. I was afraid I would tear this truck up beyond my means $$$ to fix it. So... Currently I am running an 80 HP tow burn PCM from DP. I am very happy with the DP PCM, it has never "lit up" the SES light, it still gives me awesome towing performance. Jody actually suggested I go with the 60 tow program, but I insisted (old habits /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/biggrin.gif) on "lil bit more"

BTW, I will owe BTS $4K here very shortly /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/crazy.gif mostly because of playing around in my truck.
