Smoking dipstick tube

I drive a early 99, I just barely changed the oil yesterday, and decided to check it again today when I got off of work, when I pulled the dip stick tube it steamed a little bit, lasted a while too, any ideas what reason that's for?

Diesels are high compression engines. You are going to get a moderate amount of blow by. This will exude from the dipstick tube or the oil fill tube when open. Otherwise, the fumes go through the doghouse into the intake tube before the turbo. Completely normal.

And just so you don't freak out - you're going to see puffing from the oil fill tube. What Justin is talking about is excessive or forceful puffing, especially a big puff every 8 firings (that might be indicative of a broken ring or cracked piston). The rude and crude test for excessive blow by is to turn your cap upside down and set it on the oil fill tube. If you have enough blow by to blow the cap off - its too much. The more precise test is a manometer setup. Nobody does that except Ford dealerships and probably not much there.
2 puffs I'd Advair and you'll be fine. May cause dizziness, heart attacks, bladder cancer, brain tumors, and sudden death.
