After riding in Travis Hot Rod Cummins at the IDI weekend, and seeing how awesome his exhaust brake was I decided that I wanted to get one myself.

So thanks to huskyhauler, I bought his Exhaust Brake for my truck.

I know that I will have to replace my down pipe in the near future, so when I do I will install the exhaust brake at the bottom of the 3" DP, then go with the existing 4" exhaust system from there.

Looks like a pretty good deal, and I just couldn't pass it up.

Has anyone used one of these on an IDI with a C6 before?

Thanks for any tips and input!

/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/rolleyes.gif I wouldn't go so far to call her a hot rod she's mild in the Cummins world - trust me on that one... But you'll love the EB I just hope it works as well on a autoloader as it does on my bolt action. Makes for stopping without brakes wonderful /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/biggrin.gif Just have to remember to press on the brake pedal so folks behind you know your coming to a whoa /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/biggrin.gif

you didnt ask me about mine.. i love it, would be without it. i had 4.10 so i didnt use it much. i now have 3.54 in the back end, i am excited about trying it out again. we live within some pretty hairy mountains, anywhere from 7.5-9.5 grades, at mile high plus elevation. pulling that big fiver of mine, it often likes to give me a "helping hand". most everywhere we go is a climb up and out, and always results in a rapid downhill following. i placed mine on a pedal switch on the gas pedal, and a switch on the shifter. the shifter mount switch is you standard 2 speed axle unit found at Napa. i had problems with the damn us gear controller, and or pedal switch always acting up, so i decided to bypass it all. this wiring set up is identical to the Jacobs Exhaust Brakes used on all the big diesel motors. anytime the switch is on, and i have my foot off the pedal, it will activate. this i have found was the easiest setup, as i never have to take my eyes off the road. that dang control box on mine was mounted down low, so it always took a second t find and turn on. thats the last thing i wanted to do while pulling a trailer while approaching a good down hill slide. just an FYI for anyone out there that really dislikes the US Gear control box.. it is an easy setup to do, and does not cost much more than $15-20..

Just comparing to Cummins trucks.

12valves need 60lb valve springs on the exhaust side when an exhaust brake is installed. Not sure if this is an issue on IDI's? Also exhaust brakes on autos dont work all that great if the torque conveter isnt a lockup torque conveter. Which I dont think a C6 is? Could be wrong. But without that direct contact between the flywheel and the rear tires the braking effort is somewhat wasted. Then again if your TC is fairly tight it may work adequately.

Also, USGear units tend to be fairly prone to problems. You might consider a remote 4" PacBrake or BD unit instead.

maybe mine wont work that well with the 3.54 then. i used it very rairly with the 4.10. there was plenty of gear to hold it back. at 3000 rpms down hill i was sitting around 63-66 mph, and there was nearly no slippage in the tranny(of course). yes the cummins B (5.9-3.9) motors need the springs on the exhaust side upgraded, as do the C motors(8.3). i have never heard of anyone doing the exhaust springs on a 7.3 or 6.9 idi. seems since we already have the operating range of rpms, it shouldnt be an issue. i agree with the electronics on the US Gear model. i had my share of problems with the electronics, but never the brake or solenoid itself (standard Bosch IP kill solenoid). problems always seem to be around the controller and or pedal switch.

Yeah Darrin, that EB was very impressive on the goat truck. An exhaust break has been in the back of my mind. I very interested to see how it turns out for you. Also, it was a pleasure to meet you and your wonderful family at the IDI weekend.
