2005 6.0L F-250 - Had problems starting. It would just turn over and that's it. Truck would try to start . It would kick and spudder with black smoke coming out exhaust. I decided to plugin eng. block heater. Truck started fine. Truck runs good after that. Temp. around 50 deg. Wife drove it yesterday now the turbo guage doesn't show that it's working. Any ideas where I need to start? I think I have glow plug issues with the starting problems? Would that cause the turbo to stop?

I had my turbo shut down on me the first time I towed my toyhauler. I was able to make it home but with no power due to turbo gone. I have a computer that told me the error code. it said that it was a turbo overboost condition. Truck(2006) is still under warranty so I took it to dealership who told me they had to re-calibrate the PCM. Since then, I have had no problems with daily driving or towing. If you can get a code reader, I would suggest starting there and see what error code it gives you. Could be an easy fix if you are having same problem I did.

Classic symptoms of a FICM failure.
The very first thing to check is the batteries. The way that the truck is wired, you will be able to crank the truck over quickly and STILL have a bad cell.
The batteries MUST be load tested and fully charged or you will not get accurate readings from your FICM check.

Next task is to check your FICM. Follow the directions on this website.

ex mounty.....Do you have any suggestions for the turbo? I swapped out a FICM that my brother in law had and the truck started right up. Turbo still not running though. Also what scan tool do you recommend?

I have the Edge Insight, which is an electronic monitor. It does have the ability to retrieve codes, but it is limited to just that, gauges and codes. Not the greatest diagnostic tool for sure, but since I have only had my truck (first diesel) for about 8 months and have had only 1 problem with it, it has been sufficient for my needs. Auto Engineuity is one that I have heard good things about. I do not know pricing and you should keep in mind I have very limited knowledge in that area and I am not recommending anything because of this. Maybe someone with more knowledge will post up a good suggestion.
As far as the turbo, do you have a CEL indicating codes are stored?

Turbo not working!!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

i have a 2005 f-250 the turbo wasn't working so i took apart and started to clean it thinking it was the sticking vanes since it throws no codes whatsoever and runs perfect it just has absolutely power and the turbo doesnt spool, my dad owns a car dealership and his friend at a parts place had a turbo laying around so i put it in the truck just to see if it was the turbo. i put the turbo in tightened everything up and started it and i was excited because i could hear the loud whistle from the exhaust since i had a straight pipe, i then proceeded to shut the truck off and clean up thinking i had solved the problem...... when i started it back up to test drive it there was no turbo sound and when i drove it its doing the exact same thing. can anyone please help me i am at a loss without any codes showing and im not sure what all could cause the turbo not to work like this . mechanic said to check VGT solenoid, pig tail, chaffed wire

ex mounty, ok guys i think ive got it working, picked it up from the mechanics today and they said they couldnt figure out what was wrong with it so i took a multi meter and tested the plug and it had voltage so i changed the vgt solenoid and i stuck a tiny little allen into the map sensor to clean it up cause it seemed to be swollen shut, went for a test drive and its driving amazing though i blew the boot off the turbo and it cracked it so i gotta order another one tommorow but other than that its driving amazing. thank you guys for all your awesome help ........ I'm going to check this out today. I'll let you know if it works. I found it on dieselgarage .com.

I'm at work and haven't had a chance to try test on VGT solenoid yet. But when wife was driving truck home she said that the turbo made a loud pressure relief noise from the turbo and called me and said that the turbo gauge wasn't working. Do you think its an vgt solenoid or a program issue. No noise from the turbo before this happen. I recently had ford dealership do an EGR cooler repair. You think its has something to do with that?

The turbo is controlled by the PCM using the MAP, MAF, EBP and the EGR valve.
The solenoid is the actuator. Check the MAP sensor hose, not only the nipple on the intake, but the entire hose. Follow it up to the sensor. That sensor is on the back of the triangular bracket on top of the HVAC box.
The MAF sensor is in the air intake tube, just prior to the turbo. The only plug in sensor on top of the tubes. Don't use anything on this sensor except MAF sensor cleaner. Anything else could contaminate it or render it non-functional.
The EBP sensor, I already wrote about.
EGR valve, I have a serious hard time believing that a dirty EGR valve could cause turbo issues, but whatever. Might as well pull this and clean it up too.
Procedure for cleaning this is use carb cleaner only, keep the liquid and the junk out of the little holes. Full write-up is HERE.
If these sensor cleanings and the replacement of the VGT solenoid do not fix the problem, you may have to get this to a Ford Dealership that KNOWS the 6.0 They can be a challenge to find.
