1993 F350 Crewcab 7.3 non turbo Automatic Austin Texas 150,000 miles

Have not driven this truck in about 8 months. Tried to jump start it and it turned over slow and smoke came off of cables at battery. Jumper cables got hot. Replaced batteries and cable ends. Turned key and nothing. Left key on and jumped across the relay on fender and the motor turned over slow but lots of smoke came off of small wire on starter. Eye on starter end of small wire on starter turned red. Everything works off of key except starter. Cables are hooked up correctly. Any ideas, Thanks in advance for any replys.

Was it stored inside or outside......we have had touble with water getting into the air cleaners and going into some cylinders. This results in hydrolock or rusting of cylinders. I would try turning the engine over by hand using the crank bolt, if it turns over good check out the starter. If it is locked up remove the GPs and try it again, watch for water............

It was stored outside. It is turning over when I jump acoss the relay on the fender, just slow and smoke starts coming off the little wire on the starter. When I try the key, it doesn't even begin to turn over....nothing at all. But everything else works. Would a bad starter do this?

Do pull the glow plugs as cdnsarguy suggested. It should spin over easier and if you get showered by water, then you will have found your problem. For the price, I would change the starter relay. If either of those don't help, pull the starter and have it tested, unless you have a starter draw tester. Tim
