I’ve been following several posts, but didn’t want to hijack someone else’s thread. Also a little lead in - my 7.3 currently has 188,400 miles and no hard start or low power issues that I notice, yet.
I am running 5W40, starts in cold weather have been great.

I have bought an AE but have not taken it out or hooked it up yet, but plan to do a buzz test in the near future and will try to get familiar with this diagnostic tool.

My question is, before I start experiencing problems (I know I’m on borrowed time (188,400) should I plan on checking and then shimming injectors if needed?

And if I’m going to go to that trouble (valve covers off) should I just pull the injectors to replace o-rings and nozzle crush washers?

I have other things on my wish list too that I may tackle at the same time- not being a daily driver will make it a lot simpler.

I guess the core issue to my question is should I do these items as a preventative measure when I am able or should I expect quite a bit more service over the 188,400 miles before experiencing problems with low power when cold, hard start, or bad o-rings letting fluids cross over? I’ve noticed some owners are just now addressing these issues with 260k or 300k miles.

Post Edit: I expect to only put about 3,000 miles on the truck per year, if that, until I retire (few years down the road) and then more trips/vacationing.

I wouldn't worry about messing with injectors till you actually start hearing/feeling issues with them. But renewing injector o-rings when you pull valve covers for injector work (shims) isn't that bad an idea. Not completely necessary, IMO, but can't hurt. BTW, the o-ring sets come with the copper washer at the nozzle.

I don't remember when I put my modded injectors in, but it's been around 200k ago, and they're still doing well.

But if you like digging into your engine, then go for it. (As an alternative to "If it isn't broke, don't fix it" :winking:)

Thanks for the reply and I completely see your point. I guess work habit has influenced my life too much, as part of the Maintenance Team of our corporation we were forced to give up “Reactive Maintenance” many years ago and switch to “Maintenance Machine Reliability” through preventative and predictive maintenance— of course..... my truck isn’t costing me millions of dollars a day when it’s broke down- thank goodness 😀

471,000 miles on mine and I’ve never touched them. I add two cycle oil with every fill up to keep them lubed.

That is VERY encouraging, mine is at 280k miles, I add Opti-Lube Summer Blend every tank.
I’m 70, hope it does not need any injectors while I can still drive it. Of course, here in Florida, any blue-hair bony-knuckle can still drive so I’ve probably got 30 more years to wear out the injectors!

My magic mix is 8 oz. of super tech tc-w3 and 8 oz of PS winterizer/ anti gel supplement. Although I cannot take credit. This recipe was handed down from my boss who put the last 300,000 miles on it lol.

That’s impressive mileage with no injector work. I’ve been adding 1 qt. of the 2 cycle oil to every tank, as recommended by many members here on TDS.

I don't think the injectors or your issue. I have over 340,000 miles on my original injectors with no issues yet.

I have around 250,000 miles on my original injectors, and so far, they are still working fine. I'm guessing that you could still drive for quite a while before needing to do anything to your injectors.

I have 339000 on mine. valve cover's never off. did the regulated fuel return mod at about 60k. used to run Power service white bottle (16oz per tank). stopped that about 100k miles ago. still put some in periodically. I also put a biologic treatment in about 1/year.

I wouldn't fix what aint broke

The new low sulfur fuel needing extra lube for the injectors has been discussed in the past. If you do a search you can find which products actually reduce wear. At the time I did some math and figured that I would spend enough for a set of injectors buying the good lube. So I decided not to start using anything. I might revisit the information again. Before you add any additive I would do a complete search on any tests done. Some increased wear.
