I have had a steering issue from time to time in the past month or two. When I turn left or right it does not want to return. I replaced the PS pump and thought might be fron t u-joints but when jacked up front end it turns freely.
Could it be the steering box or front u-joints? It is only really noticable when pulling. I pulled 4500 lbs today and it was really bad and the front end would stick then move after turning. I drove it empty and it did not do it much at all (or at least not noticable). Before I tear into doing front u-joints I am looking for ideas or past experiences.
Thanks

Now the steering is acting up wven when empty. Any suggestions on where to start? Just replace/fix the steering box? U-Joints?
Thanks

My vote would be for the steering gear box.
Last time I priced them it was a round 300 bucks rebuilt, but they listed three different ones for a 97 F250, never changed mine so did not dig in any deeper.

Is this an easy job to change out or special tools needed? It looks straight forward. Also, where to start to look for one?

I changed mine out a few weeks ago. Only hard part was getting the pitman arm off. Puller or pickle fork will remove it the easiest. Rest was easy. HUGE difference, finally steers like it should!

Where did you get yours? I found a couple of sites for around $190 but unsure if what I am needing.
Thanks

Alright. I got a box from NAPA for $175. Finally got the pitman arm off and everything back together and it steers fine. But after I drove it for about 20 minutes and everything got warm I started having the same issue???? Any other ideas? I am about to take it to the front end shop and let them figure it out.
