Hey guys...I was changing my oil today and as the pan was draining I got out from under the truck and was looking into the front driver side wheel well...Just to the right of upper hanger for the shock you can see the slip joint in the steering shaft that goes from the steering wheel to the steering gear box. I have been noticing lately that there seems to be some play in my steering wheel (but doesn't feel like steering box play) so I grabbed that slip joint and I could wiggle it about 1/2" in each direction. Not IN and OUT, but away from me and towards me. Is it time for a new shaft or should that play be there since its a slip joint?

Thanks,
Casey

I would change it as any play could result in a safety issue. I saw a post once about how to tighten that up with an air hammer.

yeah I remember that post too...I think I would rather just replace it and call it good.

Anyone have a part number handy?

Thanks,
Casey

I found it at powerstrokeshop.com for $108 + Shipping....anyone know of a better price? I assume this is going to be a ford only part.

How is this shaft installed?

Thanks again,
Casey

I jacked the cab off the frame last year when I was putting on a new downpipe and noticed as I lowered the cab that the steering shaft splipped apart in the middle and bowed a bit. I jacked it up again and was careful when I lowered it but it has never felt like it was as tight as it should be. I just haven't found any info on how to remove and replace it. Is it really as simple as disconnecting the bolt under the dash and one at the power steering box? Any info would be great. TIA

Yes it really is that simple...2 bolts...once you disconnect both sides and see how it slips out it very self explanatory...And it did make a night and day difference in my truck /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Good Luck,
Casey
