Hey Guys,

I have a 99 f250 psd 4x4. She is pure stock, no mods unless XM radio and a backup camera count... Last night I was under the truck painting to oil pan in an attempt to deal with the rust. That went quite well. Unfortunately I found residue from coolant running down the oil filter. I had just changed the oil and the filter was only on the truck for a day. I followed the trail up and found that there was a heavy amount of coolant residue on the "gizmo" above the oil filter. Following it up further, I found what appeared to be the source of the leak. It appears to be coming from under a bolt on what I believe is the exhaust manifold. By now I'm sure you've realized that I am not a mechanic. I a very limited knowledge of these engines and you'll have to excuse my terms. In an attempt to overcome my complete inability to describe this situation, I have attached a couple of photos. In my limited experience, I am terrified by the fact that coolant is anywhere near the exhaust system. That leads me to believe that something is terribly wrong with my machine. Please have a look at the pics and trouble shoot away. I'm all ears.

You can see the green residue on the silver fitting above the oil filter.

A close up of the "silver tube" and what I believe is the exhaust manafold. You can see the coolant trail starts at the bolt head.

Check the bolts on the oil cooler. If there loose, the gasket may be shot by now. If thats the case, you have to pull the oil cooler and replace the gaskets.

Looks like an oil cooler leak. Don't worry, it's not the end of the world, but you do need to repair it promptly.

It's not uncommon for the cooler to leak at the end caps (header) O-rings, or the gasket where it attaches to the block. They make a repair kit, and the cooler can be rebuilt if it isn't cracked. But it should always be tested for leaks and cracks if you're going to kit it. Otherwise you'll have to replace the whole cooler (~ $200).
