Hey gang, I got a strange one.

I ran my truck out of fuel yesterday. I was pulling a trailer (so using more fuel), and didn't realize that my gauge was not accurate (since I figured I had another 400 miles left with my stock and Transfer Flow tank). When it quit I had a chance to coast up an offramp, which is what I did, and sat there until I could get a couple of gallons of fuel.

I got going, and headed for the fuel station a few miles up the road. When I made the turn into the station, my power steering dropped off. I revved the engine and got it back enough to safely navigate. So after leaving the fuel station, I made sure to rev high to ensure steering. I also noticed at the same time that the brakes got soft, then hardened back up when revving.

I figured I was losing the power steering pump, since both brakes and power steering were having trouble, and there's plenty of fluid for the steering.

here's the odd part - the power steering came back. I went to drop off the trailer at my buddy's place and during the jostling to get the trailer into place..... the steering came back. I drove back home another 20 miles without any problems.

1 - any idea why this would happen? 2 - what are the odds of failure in the near future?

I dont really want to talk about the cooked smell from the clutch while moving the trailer :icon_mad: oh well, the truck IS 11 years old and on the stock clutch.

Any info is appreciated!

When you ran out of fuel, you steered without the pump running - you probably pushed some fluid out of the reservoir. You might have got an air bubble in the system, which worked its way out after some use with the engine running.

My suggestion is to top the fluid off with ATF and watch it. I don't think you need a new pump at this point.

I had the same thing happen to my buddies truck. We had to move it to his barn to repair wiring issues. Used the wheel and brakes without the engine running. Fixed everything and his brakes (hydroboost) acted funny til the fluid circulated enough to purge all the air.
