First time the WIF light came on this AM. Attempted to drain and nothing comes out-zero diesel and zero water. Nada. I have driven it around to get things up to operating temp to see if the cold is having an effect...still nothing. The WIF light doesn't come on right away and I have noticed that it will also go out. Now I have read the sensor can go bad, but what would explain nothing coming out the drain hole? I have been using the same station to fill up for over a year without problems. I have not been adding any additives and the truck runs like a champ. I am stumped. Is this component covered under the 5/100,000 as I am 2 months past my 3/36,000. Truck has 30,000 on it. Any help is appreciated.

wouldn't the heater in the HFCM keep ice and gelling from occuring?

Dealer modified the drain by putting a brass elbow with a petco/k instead of the International plug I gave them. Would that be causing problems?

There is no fuel heater on an 06. I agree, its probably plugged with ice, although I don,t understand how the engine can run as normal, unless its getting just enough fuel.

I don't understand why it runs fine either. Does the fuel run directly through the seperator? I would think that other diesel trucks would have icing/gelling issues in places like the Dakotas and Canada if that was an issue. Or Anchorage!!

That would explain why your not getting any drainage if its froze shut.

The petcoc/ spins freely, so it would seem that it is opening.

The improvised valve install may spin freely, but that doesn,t mean its inlet isn,t frozen. Your going to have to pull the valve assembly out of the HFCM to properly drain it.

I'm wondering if it would be OK to put this off until this weekend, do I run a big risk with my injectors?

what about using a heatgun to warm things up?

Low fuel pressure and lack of fuel is what will takes out injectors. So if your WIF light is flickering or not on constant, with the truck running fine, then its not likely an emmediate concern. Yes, a heat gun probably would thaw out your valve and allow it to drain.

It has been suggested that the elbow and petcoc/ can be a potential pitfall and that I should go to the modified plug that has been posted around these forums. Any thoughts on that? My father-in-law has had OEM petcoc/s on his Dodges without issues.

I wasn't aware that anyone had "successfully" adapted to a pet**** valve on the HFCM. One of the problems, is that it exits the HFCM horizontally out the side, & not vertically out the bottom. In adapting to the threads of the plug, you effectively raise the outlet position, creating a small dam before reaching the outlet of the pet****. This allows crud to build up that will never exit.

I'd get rid of the bastard valve & go with the IH replacement plug, which is only $16 and work just fine. You just snug it finger tight, since it has an o-ring seal, and you don't need the 6mm hex wrench ever again.

I had originally taken in the "new IH" plug for the dealer to install on the 1st complimentary oil change and they said that it doesn't fit! So they installed the brass elbow and pet****. I have the truck serviced at a dealer closer to home and I have assumed that they are draining the HFCM when they do the oil changes...foolish me. Anyway, none of the techs have made any issues about the "bastard valve" so I assumed everything was in order. I will have to crawl under the truck and see how it is mounted to the HFCM. At this point I have just been reaching under and turning the pet****, to no avail. It is no easy feat getting under these trucks with the step rails installed.

If someone has told you the IH plug "doesn't fit", I would NEVER use that place again, as they don't have a clue! I've had the IH plug in mine since it came out, and it fits fine thank you very much! At $16 for that hunk of brass, its a damn good deal, and makes draining the HFCM a breeze.

I just bought my new drain fitting the other day but haven't installed it yet. Do you need to put a dab of oil on the o-ring or no?

I will be checking the fit myself this weekend when I get time to drain the HFCM and see what is going on. Fortunatly, the dealer that told me it wouldn't fit is not the one I routinely use.

I sure wish it was easier to get at the HFCM because it is definitly a tight squeeze. Guess I'll try to ramp up the front driver tire onto something.

Does anyone know what size the O ring is? It would be nice to have a few on hand.

Water and contaminated fuel / debris is what takes out injectors. Injectors are lubricated by diesel fuel only, water is not a good lubricant. Running your vehicle out of fuel is rather hard on injectors as well, so you are partially right.

I'd leave the truck flat. I've never had a reason to put the front up, & I've got a 44" waist. If you put the front up, you'll make id more difficult to drain out the hole, as the fuel will want to puddle down by the filter.

If you're worried about the front drive shaft, the IH plug will fit w/out any problem. I have no idea what size the o-ring is. I've had mine on for about 3 years now & never had a problem.
