I've had both and can say easilly that the 6.0 is a huge improvement over the 7.3. You obviously know the history of the truck so just enjoy it.

The 7.3 in my 96 has been exceptionally trouble free. Descent mileage, great power, easy to maintain. I can only hope my 6.0 will be as good. Reading all the problems here does tend to freak you out a bit.

I had a 7.3 in an F250. I currently have an '03 F250 with the 6.0. The cab and chassis and creature comfort items in the '03 are much superior to my old 7.3, and at first the 6.0 was quieter, had better power and Q, but the mileage was nowhere close. Combined mileage in the 7.3 was 20, combined in the 6.0 is 17. I was convinced that this was the best truck that I'd ever had, even with the hit in mileage.

Since week before last when Ford performed their latest flash on my PCM-without my permission I might add-the 6.0 is louder, it seems to have less power and torque, and the jury is still out on the mileage; i.e. whether it's better or worse. When I say it SEEMS to have less power, it's not a dyno proven fact, but more of a seat of the pants feeling, especially when trying to pass. Now I wish that I had my old 7.3 in my current '03. If Ford has not reflashed your computer, I wouldn't take the truck to the dealer for ANYTHING unless it was unavoidable. They'll flash the PCM and then shrug it off when you complain. I feel a Chevy in my future. Maybe even a Toyota should they come out with a diesel. I've been driving Fords my whole adult life, and have been a loyal customer, but this latest has really pissed me off. Good luck with yours.

When I switched from a 97 7.3 to a 05 6.0 my buddy said to me "welcome to the 21st century" I have never looked back and I am happier with the 6.0 than the 7.3.

well i just drove it back from ohio to colorado none stop ,to darn old to do that again . the trucks performance the awesome power was double what me 7.3 was off the line and at 75 hand calculated mileage was 17.7 for 1390 miles . the quietness is sort of funny at first , have to look down and see if she's still running . creature comforts from the 1999 7.3 to the 2003 are also very nice . having trans temp from the factory is great and heated seat are a plus .

Just remember the factory tranny gauge is far from linear. It will read normal until the tranny is HOT. Not that big of a deal unless you tow huge numbers, but an aftermarket gauge is not a bad idea.

You can forget about that Toyota diesel, Four wheeler magazine is quoted as saying both Nissan and Toyota have killed their heavyduty truck idea stating that with rising fuel prices their $$$ is better spent developing other vehicles. Fine by me.

I have had my '05 at the dealer once since I got it. It will probably go back one more time for trivial issues before it hits 36K. I will tell them to keep their friggin' rookers OFF my computer- the truck runs great w/the original flash. That's your right.

I just did the same thing yesterday, and I plan to enjoy this new truck for a long time. The thing about the 6.0 is that it is squeezing 325? hp out of 6 liters as opposed to 250hp out of 7.3 liters. This means more heat. Watch your guages and downshift when the water temp starts to climb under a load. I have heard of truckers ruining their engines on one hill becuase they didn't downshift (to keep the RPMs up and the water pump working) when they should have.
