ZF 5-speed, especially if you have 4.10 final drive.
Because 5th gear is overdrive.

If you don't need an overdrive, I'd prefer the T19. Its wicked strong and has a cast iron housing. Plus, the bellhousing and tranny are separate which makes it much easier to remove and replace into the truck. The ZF is a good tranny, but it's all alum, and the bellhousing and housing are one piece. If you crack the bellhousing, you got to get a new tranny.

Just my two cents.

I've seen some well argued reasons for the t19, and perhaps it would do better off road or arround town, but if you do a lot of highway, especially a diesel, I wouldn't even consider it, the graney to over drive box is wonderfull, I have put a lot of miles on them, not sure just how many, but probably 20,000 without a problem other than the weak earley shift arm, and I'm not easy on them.

I have both, so I think I can say that I "trust" the T-19 a whole lot more than I do the ZF. The ZF is alluminum, and the tolerances change in that transmission something fierce due to expansion and contraction of the case, and I've heard of trucks in severe duty where the aluminum has actually stretched and cannot be rebuilt. However, the ZF has one thing the T-19 doesn't. And that's a real killer when it comes to MPG and engine life. If only they had made a T-20 or something. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

T-19
havent had any problems with it
the zf-5 in the 96 has lots of them.
if it wasnt for the 4.10 gears , I would try to put a t19 behind the PSD,
