Just got a question for those of you that have been running the new T6 15w...I have a 1000 miles on this oil since last oil change and it still looks like new. All my previous oil changes with T6 5w turned black almost immediately it seemed which would indicate that it was cleaning. Anyone done a change with the new 15w and monitored it lately?

My 7.3 oil changes are generally pretty clean looking after 1K miles with light to moderate duty during that time. I don't know, but, perhaps using fuel additives that help keep the engine clean also benefit the oil? Been using any fuel additives? Also, since full synthetics aren't as easily stressed under heat and other oxidation influences, perhaps it just doesn't get dirty as quickly. It could also be that the expensive oil filter you bought is doing its job.

Could be. So, i've owned this truck for 18 months, did an oil change immediately when I picked it up and 2 since every 5000 miles. First 2 with T6 5w and third with 15w. The first change I added Seafoam to the crankcase. This recent one i did use a Motorcraft filter whereas the first two I didn't. However, I've heard guys say with bypass filters that their oil turns black in a minute of running the engine.

I think 1,000 miles is too soon to have any concerns...or even assumptions.

I'm not really concerned about it, just wondering honestly.

What I've heard from many others is that there oil turns black after the first drive including myself with the first two changes. "If it's black, it's doing it's job." The result of cleaning diesel soot. Question is, why do some experience black oil every time and some don't? Mods maybe, larger injectors, smokier truck...?

I could only guess why some people have their oil turn black so quickly. But, if it was me, I would be VERY concerned about that. Black mean dirty and dirty means excessive wear. My first thought is that these trucks are chipped and tuned with an ugly rich fuel mixture. I dunno. But, it can't be good.

Right now, my oil has about 600 miles on it and is just starting to look a little dirty... but, not black by a long shot. I haven't driven it more than 10 miles since April and I have a 1,600 mile trip to make this week. I'm changing only the filter today with an STP XL filter (best I could find between Walmart and Auto Zone for a 20 year old truck). It's a quart low right now. I'm going to drain about 2 quarts of the old oil and then add 3 quarts of Rotella 15w40 back in, to fill it up, and make the 1,600 mile trip this week pulling a 16 single axle enclosed trailer. Based on previous experience, I expect to burn a quart of oil or less during this trip, and I expect the oil to be reasonably translucent when I get back home from this trip.

So, to me, someone who says their oil turns black on the first drive after a change is either dogging the **** out of their truck, doesn't have the chip tuned right, or has some serious engine/fuel issues.

I will also add that my truck has no power chip, no significant mods, and when I step on the accelerator, I don't pump clouds of black soot out the exhaust. Maybe that's why my oil stays reasonably clean.

Black in diesel oil is DIRECTLY related to fueling. If you tow heavy it gets black quick. If you drive empty, highway, and easy it stays clean a along time. Many fleet operators use a fuel credit card system and the transaction feeds back the fuel purchase quantity and their oil change for their vehicles is done when the gallons burned reaches their trigger points. All my trucks have had times when I change then haul hay or tractors and the oil is really black quick and other times I do oil change and thousands of miles later it is barely grey.
The residue from combustion is wiped into oil off cylinder walls by piston rings.

Is it possible that the previous owner was towing heavy with it and you're not?

Could be because I haven't towed my 8000 lb camper since the last oil change. I still do remember the oil turning black before I towed the last two times however.
