The tach on my 6.9 has been fluttering for a while. At idle it'll read 0 then jump to 5,000 and then go all over the place. I was wondering if anybody knew what might be the problem.
thanks

Sounds like you are needing a new tachometer sensor. It's 57 dollars at the Ford dealership and take about 20 minutes to replace.

The tach sensor is to the right of the oil filler tube on the front of the engine.

Do a search on here and there are several members who have diagrams on how to fix it.

I think you would just need to find a factory diesel instrument cluster with tach and plug it in.

My instrument cluster has no tach, but there sure looks to be a space for one (or maybe a clock?) above the PRNDL area. The IP gear housing does not have a plug, so I assume that if I wanted to go with OEM, I'd have to replace the housing + add the tach (or replace the cluster).

Was a tach not offered until '85?

Tachometer interchange

Was 1985 the first year the factory tach was offered?

What years interchange for the diesel? I've got a line on an '87, but it's a ways away. I was thinking that the dash may have changed for '87 (?).

The 87 dash is very different.

Re: Tachometer interchange

Thanks, that saves me a lot of work.

So, to add a factory tach, I need one from an '85 or '86 only, correct? Plus the IP gear housing (mine does not have the plug) and the sensor to screw into it, plus the wiring stuff.

Re: Tachometer interchange

Should be able to hook it straight up. Connector will be hanging off the alternator area side. ('85 - '86)

Re: Tachometer interchange

yes 85 was the first year for the tach. look at the part number E5TZ-17B384-A . e being 8 and 5 being.. 5. so 85 was the first year of this part and first for the tach..
