Hi all,
Just got the analysis back for my injectors from Swamps Diesel Performance. The barrels and plungers are badly scored. They say this can be caused by either water or gas in the tank. They are rebuilding the injectors but said I must drain the tank prior to installing the rebuilds to prevent further problems. I came up with a proceedure that I think will work but was wondering is some of you knowledgeable Diesel people out there could go over it and give me some feedback? My truck is a 99 F350 4WD with 7.3 liter engine. Thanks in advance!Following is what I came up with:

1 Disconnect input line to fuel pump and let Diesel drain in to container. When tank is empty, reconnect input line to fuel pump.

2 Disconnect output line of fuel pump and put end of line in container. Open fuel bowl / filter housing drain valve. When fluid is done draining, close valve and reconnect fuel pump output line.

3 Connect line to drain valve and put the opposite end in a container.

4 Fill fuel tank with 3 gallons of fresh clean Diesel fuel.

5 Open the drain valve and turn the key on to activate the fuel pump. Keep cycling on and off until no diesel flows in to container. (This indicates tank is empty).

6 Change fuel filter. Make sure fuel bowl / Filter housing is free of Diesel and debris.

7 Cycle fuel pump until Diesel flows from drain valve line and then close valve

If you want it completely clean then drop the tank. Only way to be sure. Just because you run the tank drain down as described doesn't mean that it is empty. I have run my 02 down like that, letting it siphon out the Dahl pre-pump filter then dropped the tank. There was still 2-3 gallons of fuel left. That is the fuel that you want to get out that last little contaminated bit. Sorry, but I don't see any other way to do it. It is about a 3 hour project in and out. Good luck, 106

I would try putting a length of fuel line on the water seperator drain and use the fuel pump to just pump all your fuel into a container. The little yellow lever behind the fuel filter housing is what you turn to get it to drain.

That would get most, but not all, of the fluid out. letting it siphon out the Dahl valve does the same thing and there is still a couple of gallons left inside the tank. If someone want to partially clean out the tank then that is OK but if they want to totally clean it out then dropping the tank, pulling the sending unit out the top and cleaning it out is the only way. 106

Thanks for all the feed back! I ended up siphoning out as much fuel as I could and then dropping the tank. Glad I did because I could see water in with the Diesel that I wasn’t able to siphon out.
