I have a front receiver hitch mounted fishing rod rack that I am putting spot lights on. I do not always have the rack mounted on my truck so I wired the lights up to a four prong plug (trailer type) so that it can be quickly connected and disconnected. I would like to tap into the fog lights so that the lights (when connected) will come when I turn on my fog lights. I tried to trace my fog lights wiring back but I lose it some where under the air cleaner box. Is there a terminal some where that I can tap into or do I need to continue trying to trace out the wiring for the fog lights?

I'd be inclined to tap into one of the fog light wires in the vicinity of the battery (or behind the bumper) and run that to a relay. Power for your aux lights should come from a battery terminal, thru an appropriately sized fuse, and then thru the relay to your plug. Wire the relay to activate when the fog lights are on.

Even better would be a separate switch from a power source in the cab, with a wire running to that relay. That way you'd be able to switch your spots separately and not run into the possibility of overloading an existing circuit.

I think I may have overloaded the fog light circuit. I taped into one of the hots going to the fog lights and when I tried to turn on the fog lights the fuse blew. What type of relay are you referring to? I think I may try tapping into somewhere else or possibly running a switch. I didn't want to put a switch in since the lights are only available when I have the rod rack on my truck, but I may have to. I am thinking the Fog light circuit was overloaded blowing the 10amp fuse. I think the fog lights (after market) and the Hella's on my rod rack are all 55w so the four of them may be to much for the circuit.:icon_mad:

The fog lamp circuit is only 10 amps, thus any other lights you add to it will blow it...Adding a bigger fuse doesnt help either...First off, I find it hard to believe that those skinny little fuses can actually flow 20 amps, or even 30 amps, I don't buy it.
Your best bet is to put it on a seperate switch...Thats what I did.
