Yesterday I was hauling between 19000-20000lb squash on I'm guessing a gooseneck that weighs 5000 and my truck weighs 7500lb totaling around 32500lb gross while running 35" tires. I did the message center trick and my coolant temp never rose over 111 degrees which seems kinda cool for a diesel compared to tractors and other equipment I run. I was loading the truck heavily up some hills and it would only hold about 45-50 WOT. Just wondering how the coolant temp relates to the engine temps and make sure everything was in check. ambient air temp around 98 degrees.

Thanks

Or are the temps displayed in Celsius?hmmmm. That sounds more realistic?

The temp is Celsius and that translates to about 230 degrees Fahrenheit. Under no load (empty) conditions at road speeds mine doesn't get over 90-91 degrees Celsius or about 195 F.

Just a bump for some more opinions.

It is OK. 111C is what you saw. Here's how to figure F.
111 x 1.8 + 32 = 231.8 F. I have had mine that hot before on long hilly trips, no problem, no coolant loss, just a purple turbo and downpipe. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/rolleyes.gif Talk is 250F is about the max.

Yikes! That's seriously overloaded. IMNSHO, you're asking for problems if you keep that up. If that kind of load is something you're likely to be doing regularly, invest in an F650.

111C is what I'd expect to see under those conditions. Did it come down quickly after you removed the load?

Yes, It usally stayed around 108-109. About the 650, I pulle the same loads frequently w/my 02 250 and traded it with 100,000+ miles and no problems. It also had an 54hp tow program that I ran the whole time. Just never saw the temps rise on the 7.3 and was curious about the 6.0
thanks

You're doing that with a **250**?!?!?!?!

Yikes. Double Yikes. It isn't just the engine you need to worry about. Axles. Brakes -- you don't have enough brakes for that load on an F250, even with trailer brakes. Frame. Suspension. The rest of the driveline.

The brake capacity thing is a major, major safety problem. Where are you so I can make sure I'm not there when you're hauling squash, so I don't get squashed myself?

31K GCW translates to a Class 6 truck. That's the F650.

If the 02 250 can pull that you know an 05 250 could. They have bigger brakes and haul rating more than the 04 back 350's.Did the dash gauge go up scale until the fan was heard and than go down scale?Just wondered if the dash gauge changed while the actual reading you saw was constant. They all need a good workout from time to time.

What is the "message center trick" that you are talking about? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shrug.gif

It's a 05 thing. If your truck is a 05, check your owner's manual.

You can do it on an '04 and I'm guessing '03 also. You hold the odometer reset button with the ignition off, while your still holding it turn the truck on and wait several seconds, the odometer flashes something...I can't remember exactly what. But then you can cycle through a ton of different parameters on the truck...what they all are is still a mystery to me but you still can figure out a bunch of them. The ones I know are system voltage, RPM, water temp, and I think there were some others that I can't remember right now. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shrug.gif
Anyway...good luck!!

You gotta have a Lariat with the overhead thingy for that or will my lowly XLT do it?

XLT will do it too, hold odo button in while you turn on the key, release when "test" or "sweep gauges" appear, I don't remember which.
after the gauges sweep, pushing the odo button will cycle you thru various parameters. It will stay in this mode till you cycle the key off. Go to the temp mode and you can watch real time engine temps as you drive.
