I've got the new server I ordered for the forums up right now for testing purposes. I copied all the member files and forum messages over from the current server just to have something to play with. Please give it a try (read, search, etc.) and let me know what you think of the speed. If all goes well, we've convert over to it in the next few weeks.

Note that any messages posted on the new one won't show up on the current one (and vice versa). Please don't post "real" questions on the new one yet.

Looks good here.

So what are the specs on the new server (for us hardware nuts)? Floppermines?

The lightbulbs on the main forum page are entirely missing for me. The folder icons are there once I enter one of the forums. I'm using netscape 4.72.

Also, I'm using cookiepal and it is rejecting cookies from "forums.ford-diesel.com:8080", even though this is not on my reject list. I can try setting it to accept them if you want and see what that does. I imagine that once you switch over entirely, the cookies will be sourced from www.ford-diesel.com so there shouldn't be any impact then.

The new server is a Dell Poweredge 1300 with dual Pentium3-550s, 384MB of RAM, dual 9GB SCSI-3 10,000 RPM hard drives, and Debian Linux.

The lightbulbs and such will seem strange until we completely switch over. They should work correctly after that. The server's name will remain as forums.ford-diesel.com:8080. It won't be www.ford-diesel.com since the current server will keep serving all the other regular pages.

Seems to work well Jason. But then I'm not a computer guru. Thanks for all the effort.

Couldn't you set up a redirect for anything in the /ubb directory to the new server?

We did this awhile back at work to forward everything we had a on a production server to a new server. We had a little notice on the screen to update book marks and force everyone to change by a certain date.

We did this on IIS but I am guessing Apache has a similar feature.
