The infamous E4OD to ZF5 swap

Hey y'all, I've come to y'all for help many times before so I figured I would finally post about my best project yet. I have a 1991 F250 7.3 2wd with a bad E4OD in it and my plan is to put a ZF542 in it out of a 1994 2wd with a 7.3 turbo (not powerstroke) since that's what I had sitting around. I know the flywheel is different and the newer transmission doesn't have a speedometer gear. Other than these minor set backs what else do y'all know of I might run into a snag with when I'm swapping these? Will the driveshaft work out of the 94? Any suggestions on an aftermarket speedometer that will work? I didn't see a place to hang the swing bearing so I'm guessing I'll have to build a bracket for it if it will work.

The 4x4 trans is a different length and has a different output for the TC.

You should get that trans anyway, then go looking for someone with a 4x4 who wants to make the swap who has a 4x2 trans. The 4x4 ZF5 is relatively rare compared to the 4x2.

ISTR not all the trucks even have a carrier bearing in the new models, isn't it only for long wheelbase?

Hmm, weird, I read it three times. I guess that's what I get for responding before coffee.

Now that I have coffee... should be an easy unbolt and bolt swap, IF the wheelbases are the same. If not, if neither driveshaft will fit, a shop should be able to cook one up cheap if you bring them the truck and the ends, or the ends and a good measurement.

Same trans is used in N/A and turbo version, meaning a ZF5 in a turbo truck is the same as the ZF5 in a N/A truck.

All body differences are superficial until 1997. Or was that 1998? The doors change at some point (1992?) but otherwise stuff interchanges. The F250 frame changes a bit in 1992, the F350 frame changes later.

1992 4DOOR IDI. E40D TRANS WERE TERRIBLE. PUT IN A ZF. HAD A DRIVESHAFT MADE FOR $500.00. USED THE OLD SINGLE PIECE FLYWHEEL. LOVE IT. 92 ON UP USES A GEAR IN THE DIFF FOR THE SPEEDO. 92 AND UP ZF CAN BE SET UP FOR SPEEDO CABLES. MORE POWER, TOWING STRENGTH, MILEAGE AND NO ELECTRONIC TRANS PROBLEMS.JIMA
