hey
Thinking of buying a 2wd dodge 2001 diesel.Wondering what kind of miles per gallon to expect, and if there is anything i can look for to see if the engine was abused or misued. There are 42,700 on it now and the truck looks to be in good shape possibly a small oil or trans but nothing to serious.Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks again

The only thing I would be worried about is the fuel pressure on that truck. Does the guy have a gauge on it? The low pressure pumps (lift pump) on them are crap and if they do go bad they take out the injector pump (VP-44) real quick. The lift pump should have at least 13 psi at idle. I think Dodge is retrofitting those trucks with an in-take pump now if they go bad. The lift pump should be on the side of the block under the fuel filter. That truck may have a Schrader Valve on the side of the injector pump that makes checking the pressure easy(my 2002 did). That truck may still have the 7/70 powertrain warranty depending on when it was first sold. Good luck, hopefully everything checks out for you.

My brother has an 01 6speed and gets about 17mpg (but he drives like an idiot) I'd look for signs of a chip that the previous owner might have had on it, check the exaust manifold for a plugged hole that might have had a pyrometer in it, or marks on the fuse box cover where they might have had the chip taped to. My buddy just bought a newer dodge and didn't know it had a chip in it before he bought it, and now his clutch is going out at 60,000 miles.

I have an early 2001 (one with the rear drum brakes)with 115,000 miles. It is 2wd quad cab auto with 4:10 rear end. Empty it has never gotten less than 20 MPG mixed city and highway. It gets 13 MPG pulling a midprofile 11,000+ 32' fifthwheel. It has had an Edge EZ chip since 2 miles on the odometer. Problems so far have been an evaporator core at 98,000 miles ($600 and said to be very common repair), front brakes at 90,000 miles, dash is cracked up pretty bad (very common problem), Front radio door speakers quit working (no idea why), instrument panel quit working and had to be replaced at 106,000. ($1100), one battery replaced (running on one battery for about 4 years) and two sets of tires.

My 01 6 spd 4x4 with 3:54 ratio gives me a pretty consistent 19.5mpg @ 70 mph and about 17 mpg @ 80 mph. I have had a cruise control failure and a bad oil pressure sending unit. Other than that no trouble . I havent had a dash cracking problem but mine lives in a garage. The advice of monitoring fuel pressure is excellent. If you run into a lift pump problem I highly recommend relocating the lift pump and upgrading fuel lines with a Vulcan big line kit. It moves the pump back near the tank so it is pushing instead of pulling. That and increasing the size of the lines does wonders for addressing the infamous lift pump problems.

I'm getting about 18.5 with the same truck, but that's with lots of stop and go driving and a light trailer some of the time.
