I agree that most people don't realize the versatility of a vehicle this size.

The other thing that bothers me is how the press demeans the X because of it's mileage. They always quote the milage for the gas engines. THIS THING DOES COME WITH A DIESEL!!

The bias started with the Sierra Club. You never hear anything negative regarding the pickup trucks that all use the same drive train and suspension and get the same milage.

Just once I'd like to see the press give this truck a fair shake.
The only thing Consumer Reports seems to like these days is anything that starts with the letters Toyota or Honda.

My only regret is I can't afford to buy another one before there all gone!

Well, I can and I will buy a new one this coming summer. Problem is I just got the 03 broke in, 62,600 miles, and I hate to trade if off with so few miles. But the next 4 or 5 years I will be driving the wheels off a new one!!

Roy you must be faster than me, took me 70K before the oil would stay in and stay clean /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif I went from changing every 3k to 4K now at 5K and it looks cleaner than what I was taking out at 3k.

Compaired to my gas van that took 20K to break in and I drove to 192K and was still just fine, just a little "morning smoke" (valve seals) lets see that's

70k / 20k * 192k = 672K Not sure if a 7.3 will go that far but I'll bet a few have, Hope a 6.0 is close to as good.

I will be looking for a 05 also I hope
I figure 30K for 8 years and my youngest will be most of the way through college and that is the last I will realy need one.

And if I still need a need a real tow vehicle I will just get a truck but I hate the longer WB I like my nice "short" X !

I saw the CNN "report" also. Of course with their slant on the World they reported the Excursion gets 8-14 mpg. No mention of diesel no mention of OVER 20mpg with a new 6.0L diesel.

They just need to get in bed with the Sierra ("oh no the Earth is going to hell") Club and be done with it.

Next thing you know and we'll all be shot and burned by the Earth Liberation Front eco-terrorists members. Thanks CNN!

I spent $2,000 on a camper shell for my Doge Ram to protect our dogs from the extreme heat of the Calif. valley in the summer time when driving on vacation. It was 104 F. one day outside, and with a foam gasket between the cab and shell window to keep the heat out, and with the AC blasting in the cab hoping it would go into the shell, the shell was 103 F. With the wife freaking out, we had to finish our vacation with 3 kids in the rear quad cab seats, and 2 very furry dogs sitting up front with me and my wife. It was miserable. Thank the lord for the Ex, because that with never happen again. And, I have mine! Mabey in a few years it will become a collectors item (lol).

All,

Kathy and I are just sick about this too. If we could afford to buy another one and could get it with the 7.3L diesel we'd buy it and pickle the darn thing...but we can't and it isn't available with that engine anyway.

I wrote to Ford nearly two years ago when I first heard this rumor and told them their biggest problem was the lack of refinement in the package. We waited until they offered the adjustable pedals and a few other items not available for the first couple of years, and were just dumbfounded at how the Excursion didn't even offer the amenities of their truck line, much less close to the refinement of the Suburban, but it did offer a diesel which was the major point to us, as well as the fact that it was bigger and we needed bigger.

This cements that we will be modifying our Ex and drive it into the foreseeable future. Ford now has nothing to compete with the Suburban, Chevrolet now has no incentive to put a diesel into that product line, and those of us that dearly love the vehicle will be relegated to having to try to keep our existing ones up and running. One news source said Ford was going to convert the Excursion production line into another line committed to the newly updated F350. Had they put the refinements of the Suburban into the cab, and the upgrades/updates they are putting into the F350 into the Excursion, and only offered the V10 and diesel, I'm fairly sure even with the abysmal mileage the V10 gets; with committed marketing I'm pretty sure they Ex would have grown into a stronger seller. Like those before that posted about the obvious bias in reporting on the Ex we too are aggravated, but the bottom line is that it appears our view did not prevail. My previously mentioned letter elicited nothing more than a call from Ford asking for some additional information, but no assurances of any kind, and now we know why.

We will continue to participate on this board to glean expert advice and others experiences on their Excursion. In spite of its shortcomings we view ours as our favorite vehicle of all time.

Regards,

Phil & Kathy

for any of the purposes i have seen here, i have to say i like vans better. i went on a 1400 mile round trip last summer and rode with another contracter in his ex to do a side job(cottage for a general contractor) and we also towed his trailer. it rode nice but the interior just does not work as well as a van when using it as a work truck that can tow and also if need be, haul people. lots of people.

i got a van so i dont have to also tow a trailer everyday. but it tows just as well as any pickup or ex when it has too. he did have some real neat roof racks for it that could hold ladders too if need be. he dumped it and went back to a crew cab with an 8 foot bed.

he said he dont like vans. and now dislikes the ex more for a work/general use truck.

i also like trucks better then vans for all around driving, but they just dont do what the van can do for me. i would never take an ex over a van for a work/general use vehicle. just not enough room to haul all of my crap for work and sanely access what it can hold.

maybe ford will just start producing 4x4 or awd 4x4 vans like gm does now to make up for it.

i do have to admit though.

i would rather be seen towing my tt and cruising on vacation with the family in an ex over anything else.

they are better looking then any other ute imo. definatly look a whole lot better then a van. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/ooo.gif

I'm really suprised at some of the things that are being said. For one, it's relitivly short production run is old news, years old. The Excursion isn't realy in a class with any other vehicle either. Closest thing is a 2500 Suburban but it's not really in the same market, but even so, how many of those are sold???? Ford doesn't need to advertise for the niche market that it fits. I'd do the same thing if it were my low/limited production cash cow. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Will the extended Expedition be a good replacement? I can't see how, since it is and will be in a different market as well. It's in a market with the Suburban where the target is a cushy people hauler that may tow family toys on the weekends. Ford tossed a unique vehicle out there and filled a small gap.

BTW, the Expedition is set to debut wiht the new v6 diesel and GM IS working on a diesel for the Suburban. It's going to be a new generation of diesels that need to be in a new generation of vehicles.

Oh, yeah? Where is this thought from? Give us some concrete evidence of this... not heresay, or "my dealer's shop foreman's sister's brother's ex wife's brother-in-law's adopted son's goldfishes breeder said so" stuff. Not trying to be an a$$, but the baby V-6 Powerstroke "is coming" has been kicked around soooo long, and so far all anyone can come up with is the small diesel going in the cab-overs.

Really? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/eek.gif Well I might suggest reviewing before posting because a "smart a$$" is just how that post comes across. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

I had a reply and decided to delete it. It appearently won't mean anything. You'll probably claim Ford and Nav. never had any agreement for a v6 deisel, they never got into a legal battle over it, Ford never made up excuses why it was delayed to cover the law suit etc. etc. so the rest would be usless anyway. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

I'll be the first to 2nd this motion. I've been driving since I was 16 and I'm now 45. I've had numerous cars and trucks. I've had more fun and enjoyed this diesel Excursion truck more than any other vehicle I have ever owned.

Ford ...Are you listening?

Okay, FamilyRide, let's try this again, and I AM NOT trying to be a smart a$$ this time, either...

Oh, I hadn't heard the V-6 diesel would debut with the extended Expedition. Where did you read or hear this (notice I removed "thought", it was supposed to be deleted with a removed sentence). Please provide us with some supportive data that we can pass along to our non-believing brothers, because many of us keep hearing that "someone" knows it's coming, but so far all we have seen is the V-6 Powerstroke in the cab-overs. I personally would love an Expy or a 150 with a small diesel. It's just been talked about for so long, I've given up hope for the immediate future.

By the way, your reply certainly would mean something to me as well as others. And as far as the Ford and Nav. stuff, I've heard it, read it, and believe it. I have a friend who tests Strokes at the Melrose Park plant, and wish he'd spew a little more information, but he's too loyal. My heart used to be in the 150's, and the new styling has been tugging at my next vehicle savings. I just like diesels and any light of hope other than the bi-monthly resurfacing V-6 in the cab-overs would be appreciated.

Thanks for the constructive criticism, and Happy Holidays to you, too FamilyRide.

Our #1 fav SUV is the Excursion(of course!) and my second fav is my late '85 GMC Jimmy 6.2L Diesel 4x4 which was a bear to start on 20 degree or less days(this morning 13 degrees) /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/ooo.gif

As far as the Baby Powerstroke V6 Diesel in the Expedition, its pretty common knowledge that Ford and Navistar have had MAJOR issues bringing it to market. That IS THE ONLY REASON that Ford continues to produce the Excursion.

So, if Ford has set final production dates for Excursion, my educated guess is that the Extended Expedition with the V6 Diesel is Finally Ready.

My question is; what in the heck does Ford think an extended Expedition V6 diesel has to do with a diesel Excursion?? To me it's just like saying to a guy who needs an F350, "go ahead and take this F150 since I have it on the lot". I predict that Chevy will start producing a diesel Suburban soon and Ford can kiss ALL it's SUV buyers goodbye except a few soccer moms (oh yeah, Chevy already has them too).

Ditto, I don't want less power to tow my 41 ft TT, I want more. The retards at Ford are dumping the diesel Excursion but keeping the worlds most useless, ugly vehicle..the Thunderbird. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/vomit.gif
