This may be a pointless post but i will shoot it out there anyway. its been a while since my last diesel pickup. i cant remember if my old truck did this or not. i can hear a faint tick, tick, tick that gets more rapid with rpm and drowns out/disappears above 1200 rpm or so, to someone that didnt know the difference they may think its just part of the diesel sound. Its not really an alarming noise at all, its just something i do notice. Do these engines need periodic valve adjustment?? The cummins i had did. also this is my first engine with a HEUI type fuel system, do the injectors make noise enough to where you can hear them over the engine its self? Also i did notice some carbon build up where the downpipe joins the turbo and there is a light sooting on the insulation on the firewall, so it could very well be an exhaust leak. Like i said may be a pointless post. is there a gasket on the downpipe to turbo flange?

Yes and yes, then no to the downpipe gasket. It has a flange type seal.

The little cover on the vacuume pump will also make a ticking sound that follows rpm . Just a thought .

SO do these engines need valve lash ajustment periodically?? I located my tick to the passenger frontmost cylinder with a stethescope. either a noisy injector or valve lash out of spec.

well def not a valvetrain tick, it stops during deceleration. atleast with my engine on decel it seems like the engine stops running, it gets real quiet. so no ticking. will check for exhaust leaks today.

It's not a quiet motor by any means. I can really hear my injectors the most when coasting with no load but foot on the pedal a bit(adding a touch of fuel). I can hear all 8 of em then. If you think you have a weak injector find someone with a scanner that can do a buzz test. You could probably hear a difference in the sound of the coils if one is getting weak. Other than that if runs good I'd drive that BABY!!!

yeh cold it does change the sound of the injectors when on max setting. didnt change the ticking though. I think i have narrowed it down to: either a "Louder" than usual injector solenoid, or valvetrain adjustment. i will pull it apart sunday afternoon. i know the valves are hydraulic but there still has to be some kind of adjustment.
