My motor is in, and she runs! Wow, I had my doubts, but it runs.

I need to advance my timing a bit to get it back to where it was before I tore it all apart. However, with the nuts loosened, I can't for the life of me get that IP to budge. I was finally able to get it to move maybe 1/32" using a huge pair of vice grips on the housing and pulling it. Then, while holding the vice grips with one hand, I tightend the top nut which held it.

Is it supposed to be this hard to adjust the timing? Am I supposed to undo all the hard lines? Am I missing something? Of course, my shop manual tells I need a different manual to describe the timing procedure. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/vomit.gif

I had to tap mine with a rubber mallet.

There is a tool that Ford has for adjusting the timing. It is like a big spanner wrench. So, no, you are not doing anything wrong. You don't need to loosen any fuel lines. You don't need to move the IP very far to adjust the timing.

Look on the front of the IP body is there a square block there that is for an open end wrench to assist in the rotation. I do loosen the lines on the IP it will help some, you do not want to put a permanent torque on the lines and cause cracking.

Thanks guys. At least I know I'm doing it right.

I plan to take it to a shop for proper timing, but wanted to get it back to where it was before I pulled it all apart as it was running good. But, it seems it was pretty far advanced... maybe 1/8" to 3/16". So, before our x-country trip towing a 5th, I want to be sure it is timed right.
