Just got a new 2012 King Ranch, needs rear shocks and new tires, otherwise in really good condition, new brakes all around, new brake booster, new front end parts. Pretty much set for the long haul.


Our plans are for road trips towing a travel trailer, so it will be our tow pig, and spare vehicle when needed. Funny thing too, bought it and my daily driver F150 needed some work before it's warranty expires in 120 miles, so worked out great, been driving the Ftreefiddy for a couple days now.



So what would be a decent tire for this, we don't off road, but will drive in snow, and it will be mostly highway when we do.

Whatever brand you get a narrow tire will do better in snow than a wide one.

The old rule out West was always narrow, high-profile for snow since most roads were not maintained and the narrow tire cut through to road surface where it could get traction. This was true for heavy lugged, studded and/or chained.

Now that roads are maintained more quickly and see more traffic, many argue a standard width tire with good siping and or studs creates a wider surface area (more grip) on plowed or snow-packed or icy roads.

My personal favorite for dedicated snow these days is the General Altimax Arctic w/studs but they are only available in popular widths. Its getting hard to even find narrow & high-profile anymore.

My wife has a BMW 535 ix with the wide tires and it does great but, I do put studded tires on in the winter. I have another buddy that runs standard size Bridgestone blizzacks year round. and does well on snow and ice. I am just thinking the OP got a DRW and if that is the case if he is empty he will not have the weight needed for traction. Now if he has and uses 4x4 as need he won't have much of a problem. BUT!! The larger the tire the less downforce PSI. I have a few friends that have big aggressive tires that can't get up a icy hill because they have too much area on the road and they can't get the traction needed. If you are going to run a stock/wide tire without studs on ice you need to suck it up and get a soft tread sniped tire like the Blizzacks. I did have Michelin tires and they where great but not as good as studs.

I missed that about the Dually. You’re right, the flotation would be dangerous with greater width.

Michelin Defender......

I have used the Michelin LTX . The Defender replaced the LTX and has much better tread life.

It is a SRW 4x4. I need to update my profile, my last big truck is still in there. If it were Dually I would just get BFG Commercial TA for it. The King Ranch has 20" wheels which narrows the choices down too much. The Firestone tires it has on now are highly rated, but no longer available, or I would just get a new set of those. Looks like the BFG KO2 will be the ones, getting a lot of good feedback on them, but they are pricey @ $300 each.

I may look into 18" aftermarket wheels and tires as a package, and put the KR wheels aside. It would give me a greater choice in tires and may even cost less.

I've been running the Cooper Discoverer AT3 for quite a few years, and have had good service from them. I run them year-round without studs.

I am not looking for a Winter tire though, I want one for all seasons. Having two sets of tires is mighty expensive and takes up more room than I have. Already have two sets for my F150. Of course, a tire that handles snow well is good, but also needs to be able to handle hot pavement without wearing out in 20 miles like a good snow tire will.

I think the AT3's would serve you well. I get good wear from them. I could check how long my last set was on the truck if you'd like.

Local place has them for $273. Discount Tire. $1503 out the door. I used to sell and install Coopers back in the 90's, they were always happy customer tires back then. Have Coopers on the wife's Focus too.

I replaced my last set of AT3's at 42k miles, just a touch under 4 years. When I rolled into the shop to get the current set down in Spokane on a road trip, they were about a zillionth of an inch from the wear bar on the RF tire. I could have run them a bit longer, but had just installed a new camper which put the truck at GVW, and we were a long way from home. I had made arrangements to get them installed in Spokane along our route. Mine are 265/75R16 size so are a bit less expensive than for the larger wheels (not sure why they charge more for a bigger hole in the middle:winking:). I paid ~$625, and they had a $70 rebate on a set of 4. :thumbsup:

The Michelin Defender is good for all seasons, and it is rated M/S for mud and snow. It has a 50,000 mile warranty, and it costs less than $300 per tire. I have used the Michelin LTX M/S2, which is the progenitor of the Defender, on my truck for many years, with excellent results.

Very interesting. Do you have more info?

I ran LTX M/S and they would get cracks in the rubber.
Then started running M/S-2 and liked them alot and had good life.
Last time installed the Defender and they are wearing faster than the earlier versions.

Always DISCOUNT TIRE.
Always 5K-6K free balance & rotations.
Always Load Range-E around 60-psi.

EDIT:
I have started treating the sidewall twice a year with Meguires Endurance Tire Gel (the purple stuff) because the UV out here is bad.

Same Discount Tire. I went in to buy the Defender and that's what I was told.....not sure sometime I think they dont even know. Great tire at any rate. I made them match Castcos price!

I came across Nankang in the 20" size that I can get from Discount Tire. All reviews I found on them were positive, and they are only $150 each. Considering what the truck is for, I may go this route for now. They have provisions for adding studs too. If I get two-three years they will be worth it provided the snow traction is what they claim, it has the 3 peak ratings.
