Time to replace the tires for the X.
I do NO snow nor off road. I do tow a lot of boats.
My Michlen LTX M/S were "ok" but the tread pattern would "cup" due to the M/S tread designe. I do want E rated load range tires.
Should I also consider a different size tire.......I want to stay with the original 16" rims.

All suggestions are welcome!
Thanks
Ted

the factory firestones on my 02 4x4 x that were replaced under the recall had about 55k on them and still had about 40% tread left, i went back with the same tire, don't be scared of the firestones, they wear great.

I also agree about the firestones. Mine were great until they wore out at 58,000 miles.
Cupping is caused by shocks that are worn out or too soft for the wheel/tire comb, allowing wheel hop, not necessarily by tread pattern. Yes, A/T's or M/T's are more prone to hop because they typically aren't nearly as round or uniformly balanced in the manufacturing process (or on the machine) as a good load range E street tire, and because about the time folks put their first replacement set of tires on at 55,000 miles, they go with bigger tires but they haven't replaced those factory shocks that were worn out at 30,000 miles. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/rolleyes.gif So yeah, cupped tread results.
I have skyjacker platinum shocks on my excursion and it is stiff enough to hurt at times, but I have zero wheel hop. Edelbrock gas shocks weren't enough to eliminate it.

Just for clarification, you guys on here that got their tires replaced under warranty were running Firestone Steeltex A/T? Is that correct? My X has plain old Firestone Steeltex (no A/T) on them and my wife and I both dislike them. I do think they wear like steel, but they have apauling wet traction. My wife hates the idea of being in the X at highway speeds in the rain. Just my $.02.

Have been running M/S Michilin for 35k, rotate every 5k and they look almost new, no cupping whatsoever. Front still has oem shocks and rear has edelbrock, I don't bottom out going over bumps and it rides good. OK, maybe I got a lemon!!!!LOL By the way I have a 2wd.

No cupping on my Michelin tires. I have run the LTX M/S on numerous vehicles and never had a problem. I do rotate the tires ever 5,000 miles. IMHO, the best all around tire available for noirmal driving.

I don't understand how but the E-range Firestones seem to ride, grip, and handle much better than the D-range Firestones they replaced (at 33K miles, very last week of the "safety campaign).

Winter weather traction with the D-range Firebombs was horrible. It is just fine with the E-range, same diameter, width, and tread pattern. Go figure.

I also tow a boat. My Cooper Discoverer A/T's have been great now for over a year and about 35,000 miles...I still have a lot of wear left rotating them every 5K-6K. They now have a new Discoverer ATR which is an even better tire...the guy I work with just put some on his 2500 Dodge. They are pretty sharp. Bridgestone Dueler A/T Revos are also a very popular choice on this site. I'm actually thinking about getting these next time. I have seen them cupping before but that may be due to other issues as said before. I also really like the Toyo Open Country tires that have a tread pattern similar to the Bridgestone Dueler A/T Revo. My neighbor has a 2000 F-350 that he tows a very big 5er with and he just put a set on his. His brother is involved with a tire shop in some way. I might even try those Toyos next time!

Just one comment on the Revo's

After they get over half worn they seem to gain road noise.

I will be putting my second set of Revo's I had for my 02 on the 05 in the fall I am sure.
The Rugged Trail BFG,NGs don't even seem to do well in the wet and tehy are new.

I am sure by fall I will not be happy with the winter traction.
