Have any of you heard about the tc's on the 99's having a problem? My truck rattles really loud at an idle, it does quiet down when I am driving. I want to fix this it drives me nuts, But I want to make sure I fix the right thing. Is there a performance difference with different torque converters?

Thanks for your help.

I just experienced the same thing, and it turned out to be the flex plate. Mine was busted pretty bad, but somehow it kept running. Same rattling sound-really bad at idle, but better when driving. Part cost me $175 plus 8 hours of shop labor. If you have the equipment to drop your tranny, do it yourself.

I was told from Ford that my TC is most likely the cause of that same noise. is it possible to drive a little while longer on this problem? I know that changing it would be the best thing to do, but I can't get it replaced right away. Thanks in advance.

If you think it might be the flex plate AND the TC...buy yourself a flexplate from an online parts place, and then drive up to BTS in Arkansas. You'll never pay another dime to fix your tranny after that!

This was a common problem for the '99. The noise goes away when the TC locks up. Yes, there are differences in TCs. You don't want to be putting a high performance unit in front of a stock transmission. The transmission will not take the increased torque multiplication.

The newer Ford replacement torque converter for the 4R100 is a good value choice. It is triple disk with torrington bearings. Much better than the original units. In the $400 range from www.powerstrokeshop.com .

My 99 had he same loud rattling at idle and nobody could tell me what it was. One Ford dealer told me it was one of the injectors "cackling" and there was a newer version they could swap it out for that would eliminate the noise. I didn't and several months later the transmision started shifting bad, slipping between shifts. I took it to a different dealer that works only on the F250 and larger trucks (RVs, buses, etc). The torque convertor was coming apart and the tranmission had metal pieces in it requiring a rebuild. I would get it out of there before it causes more damage.
