I just experienced the same thing, and it turned out to be the flex plate. Mine was busted pretty bad, but somehow it kept running. Same rattling sound-really bad at idle, but better when driving. Part cost me $175 plus 8 hours of shop labor. If you have the equipment to drop your tranny, do it yourself.
