I'm looking at trading up and wanted to find out what everyones thoughts were on the tow boss 4.30 option verses the 4.10ls....how much of a decrease in mileage will I get if I go with the 4.30? Is there that significant of a difference?

Thanks!

How much do you pull? I would only do it it you pull real heavy.

My other truck is a 06 crew short dually 4x4 with 4:10 diesel and auto and the best mileage to date stock is 16.5 mpg. But it has less than 10k on it yet.

As far as driveability the only noticeable difference is highway speed (obviously) you have to push the dually alot more to keep your speed up. RPM is probably 300 or so more with the 4:10.

I have the 4:10 rears and at 70 mph I am turning 2250 rpm' . I would not like to turn 2500 all the time unless I was towing 18-20,000 lbs. seems the engine is screaming all the time. Just my opinion.

Screaming? We are talking about DIESEL engines aren't we?

Give me a break. At 70 MPH with the 4:30, this truck is quieter than my ole 7.3, 4:10 ever was! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/rolleyes.gif

but how is the mileage in comparison...is it worth the extra $'s for the tow boss? Should I only look at it if I am towing heavy?

I've always had the 4.10's...

My mileage sucks. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/vomit.gif 19000 on the clock and I get 13-15 hwy/city and 11 towing (13K). But then again, I didn't buy this beast to save on fuel. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/rolleyes.gif

I have the Tow Boss with the 4.30's in my '06 Dually. Fuel economy is OK at around 13.5 right now on the hills and backroads but I'm still under 1K on the odometer. I haven't towed with it as yet to see what it will do with the fuel economy. She goes thru the shift program pretty quick and I cruz the highways at around 70-75 mph. My past trucks had 4.10's and I replaced my work truck with an '06 with 4.10's also. If your gonna tow 14K +/- frequently I would recommend the 4.30's w/tow boss.

I'm getting about 15mpg combo city/hiway empty on my 06.
A friend of mine has the same truck with a 3.73 and is getting the same mpg. Most likely he is pushing his more then I am.

My understanding is you can get it on the 250 also.

I just swapped in 4.30 gears with my 35" tires and am seeing lower fuel mileage on the road. i haven't ran a full tank through it but it's gone down from 18-19 on the road to like 13-14. all this is driving at 70mph. in town towing a landscape trailer, i've gone up from 10-11 to 13.

4.3 gears also can be had in with the V10.

But

TowBoss Package = Includes 4.30 LS rear axle, increased GCWR to 26,000 lbs (F-350 DRW only; requires 6.0L diesel engine, Auto tranny and Tow Command system)

This comes from Fords book

I can tell you the mileage sucks, but then again, it does not look like the Ford really gets that good of mileage in the first place. I am towing 17k and still have under 1k miles on the engine and have only got 7 - 7.5 mpg. City/Hwy no towing is neting 10-11mpg. Less than half of my previous tow vehicle. However, I must say, like it has already been said, I did not buy this for the gas mileage!

That said, towing 14k I would look at the 4:10's. I have several friends that tow 10k - 12k with 3:73's and all have no problems and get much better mileage than I do. I personally got the tow boss only because of the increased GCWR. 4:10's would probably been the better fit.
