Is it ok to tow a trailer in overdrive. And is there a certain weight at which you should use overdrive.

I tow an 8500 lbs 5th wheel and use OD anytime I can. I kick it out of OD for big hills, in town, etc. I'll kick it out of OD myself if I think it is going to down-shift on a hill. I try to run right around 2000 RPM on the highway. If its a really big hill and I can run it up to about 2500RPM, in OD, before the hill I hold that all the way up it or even accelerate if necessary. If I hit the hill at 2000 RPM I'll be downshifting and loosing speed. On the interstates I try to tow in OD with cruise on as much as possible. I guess the bottom line is, Don't lug the engine or cause the transmission to hunt!

Ford's E4OD and 4R100 on the Powerstrokes were specifically designed for towing in OD. Yes, previous to these trannies, towing in OD was considered taboo. I personally have seen several people in older gassers towing very small loads with OD and smoke their trannies.
However, if do too many go fast engine mods, you'll be back posting a different question, like, "How much does a new tranny cost?" Or like me--"Suncoast, MB, or BTS, who's the best bang for the buck?"

I am not sure how well designed the 4R100 is for towing in overdrive I smoked the overdrive in 2 of my 3 trannys while towing in OD although I tow in OD now 23K with no issues with ATS unit installed they actually beef up the overdrive cog in the tranny so it will hold so stock maybe they can hold up to some towing in OD but with mods like you said they will be asking where to find a new tranny.

Up until Saturday I towed in OD all the time, let the tranny downshift if she felt like it. Saturday climbing a long steep grade she never downshifted, just keep slowing down. egts climbing, then i felt the unimaginable slip, shudder slip and I am sure it was the od clutches starting to slip. popped her into od OFF and then down to 2 and we hit the top at 25 mph, and had a transit temps on egt at 1400
tranny climbed to just below my 220 mark. she wasnt happy, but we were heavy and were pulling at max gross weight if not maybe a few pounds over( I ate breakfast)
