Ok first off I didn't know were to post this so feel free to move to were it should be. I am looking at trying to get an older Kobota (I think thats how you spell it) tractor running it hasn't been started in around 4 years. My father in law told me I could borrow it to move snow if I can get it running. Any input or ideas on were to start? I know the basic like new battery check oil and coolant. Should I drain the diesel out of the tank or just add some 911 I don't know if diesel goes bad like gas or not. Sorry for the long post any help would be appreciated. Thank you.

Some information on the tractor would help get things started.

What model and horsepower? What year? How many hours on it? Have you tried to start it yet?

If it was me I would check the oil and coolant, turn the key and see what happens. If the engine is locked up or something similar you will not have wasted any money. If the battery is dead, either jump or charge the battery and just see. If anything sounds or feels wrong shut it off and go from there.

It would be a good idea to change the oil before you use it and certainly would not hurt to do so before you try to start it but that would be your decision. If it has hydraulics I would change the hydraulic oil as well before using it.

Thank you for the reply I don't have much info on the tractor. I was told it was a smaller model not sure what year or model hp. ect. Going to go see if I can get it running on Tuesday. Like I said just going to borrow it for a while I will make sure and check and change fluids.

Has it been sitting inside or outside? If inside condensation and contamination would not be as much of an issue. If outside, was it covered or not?

As far as I know it has been outside for at least this winter probably longer. I do know we have to take another tractor to dig it out and can pull it into a shop to try to get it running. I don't have much better to do as I have been layed off from work and it should move more snow than my 4 wheeler. All it should cost me is fuel to drive up to see if I can get it running and changing the fluids and some upkeep wile I have it as I like to take care of the things I have.

Don't mix any diesel 911 in with the fuel. It tends to find weak spots in older fuel line seals. Diesel does not go bad like gas. It keeps for a long time if the moisture does not get to it. If the fuel is questionable though drain it out and add some fresh fuel.

So, how went the tractor start????

Oh, by the way, a good battery is a must. Most of the Kubota's I have seen have glow plugs. If you could, it wouldn't be a bad idea to have another car jumping the tractor while starting (even if it's a good battery). Would not hurt....

Oh, check the flywheel for any access openings. Mice might have made a home... they can fill it fast and things tend not to turn.

When I bought my 1968 Case here is what I did.

Jumper cables from my truck (idleing at 1500 rpm)

Open the throttle 3/4 to full.

Crank it over and give it small sniffs of ether.

Not sure if this is the right way, but I knew none of the intake heaters were working.

Sorry I didn't get back sooner been busy. Got the tractor on Tuesday and it had been outside for around 5 years. Used another tractor the get on the trailer got it into a heated garage and let it thaw out. First problem one cylinder stuck pulled the glow plugs and put some oil in the cylinders then let it sit. Got it broke loose and drained the fluids and replaced took some turning over but it started up. seems to be running good. Think I will change the motor oil again after a few hours of running and have to get a new battery so I don't have to jump it. Thanks guys for your help.
