1997 CC 4wd. 198K miles automatic. Installed a trailer brake controller the other day. Hooked up to a neighbor's trailer and everything was fine. All lights worked. Next morning going to work something was off. Lights on and the transmission would not shift out of third gear. Turn lights off and the transmission shifted and the RPM dropped. OK. Turned lights back on and the transmission jumped back into 3rd and RPM jumped. Disconnected the brake controller. Snipped the wires. Nothing is connected. Turn lights on and the tranny stays in 3rd gear. Turn lights off and she shifts. Also now when lights are disengaged when I push the brake pedal the instrument panel lights engage. Weird, huh? Again, brake controller is removed. Ran DTC's and I have Cam Shaft Sensor throwing a code. I will buy and install a new one. What is going on with the transmission and lights? Seems like a huge coincidence that all this happened after I connected a trailer brake controller.
Thank you
Jeff

Check all the fuses in the underhood and underdash boxes (at least the light and trailer related ones). Check all your brake/turn signal bulbs , including the 3rd brake light on the cab. You might want to pull the main light switch and check for evidence of melting/overheating. Cheers!

Don't replace anything just because it's mentioned in a code definition. Codes must be DIAGNOSED before a repair can be identified.

The transmission fault sounds like it's related to the brake light circuit or to one of the taillight ground wires, which could be related to the TBC or to the trailer, or it might be coincidental. Again: diagnose first. How exactly did you connect the TBC? How exactly is the trailer connector attached? Pics might help.

How exactly is the TBC attached? I wired black to white and red to green. How else does it go? Of course I wired it according to how you wire something. I don't understand the question. Really. Not even trying to be an ass. I must have done something right because all trailer lights, turn signals and brake lights on the trailer worked as supposed to.
I appreciate the advice and will look into fuses and such.
Thanks

I think he meant was the brake controller hooked to the factory connector under the dash or somewhere else in the harness? Probably a similar concern with the trailer plug receptacle/harness … factory or was it wired in some other way and where did it get spliced into? Cheers!
