Today I drove about 70 miles pulling my 5th wheel. I have a 2001 Ford F250 PSD. I was backing the trailer into my lot. Is a hard S turn back. I puts a lot of pressure on the truck a couple of points. I have read a couple threads that this maybe a situation of over heating. One person called it puking the fluid.

Does anyone know about this and can you give me some tips? Should I refill tomorrow and go on? What can I do to not have this happen again. I am going to get gauges installed soon, I know I need to get them in. But what else can I do?

I did not hear any noises and it seemed to contiune to back-up ok.

Alot of stock tranny's will puke fluid like that when backing up. There is no air flow. I knew it was time for an aftermarket tranny when mine did it w/o my trailer hooked up.

Update - put in three QTs of fluid. Took it for a spin - no load. Shifts fine and no leaks. I even took a long back-up just to check. So it appears it was to over heat thing.

I am going to take her to the Ford shop tomorrow. I am going to ask for the 6.0 cooler, I have had several suggestions that it is much bigger and can bolt right where mine is, so no special stuff. I am also going to flush the tranny. I am considering running synthetic in her. Been reading that it reduces the temp 20 degrees... Any suggestions here?

Ordered my gauges this morning, if I get them in before the truck leaves the shop, I will take them down and have them install them. I have a 400 mile RT this weekend. No real pulls, other than headwind can be a bugger here in Texas at times. So this weekend is my first break in trip before the big 'un this fall.

try using low range when backing up the trailer. it puts alot less stress on the tranny.

The cooler will bolt right in place, but you have to do some "plumbing" Nothing serious. I am going to do mine tomorrow I think. If you want some directions shoot me an email,(Check my profile, and take out the "removemefirst" from the address) I will forward some I got from another user on here...

Thats no good. Ever since that happend I check my fluid every week or two because I cant afford for this thing to blow out on me right now. I also drive it like an old man for the most part.

I had the same problem with my tranny. When I would back up the trailer, it would "puke" fluid as well. Took it to a repair shop and said I should get a new tranny. I did and no more puking but the OD light comes on now when shifting between 1st and 2nd. Gotta get that fixed now.

The shop said reverse is hard on these trannies something about alot of pressure in the system and if any o-rings are bad that pressure bypasses the system and comes out the weep hole.

I'll throw a "me too" flag here. I was towing HEAVY and when I backed the trailer into the drive, quite a noticable fluid trail. Now for me this was the first time in about 6 months the tranny temp had been over 160. (about 180). I checked the fluid and it was about 1 1/2 qts low. I have PML trans pan. The next day I towed the same weight and no fluid puke. There was a a bit of oil at the converter inspection cover. I took the truck to the dealer and they advised that in reverse higher line pressures can push fluid out the overflow. I had a bit of weeping at the front pump seal. SInce then no problems.

Ford has a updated seal that can be instaled to stop some of this puking. This is another reason to not tow without gauges, this goes for any auto trans in any vehicle. For the OP, why not install the 6.0 cooler yourself. Takes lees than an hour, the cooler can be had on Ebay for around $150. The dealer will charge you $400+ for the cooler and a couple hundred at least for the install after they argue with you that it can't be done. You better bring the 3/8 to 1/2 barbed fittings because they probably won't have them, another reason for doing it yourself. If you need any help just PM me.

Same thing happened to me (almost). I was taking some people up Pikes Peak at slow speed (forward) and mine puked 8 quarts. I let it cool for about an hour, got some more fluid from the rangers, topped it off and drove home 80 miles back to Denver. The tranny never did run right after that so I bought a BTS before it left me stranded somewhere.

I had just bought the truck and hadn't installed the gauges yet.

Gauges will help you monitor what the tranny is doing. It may still puke out fluid but at least you can see when you get the temps up, you can take it easy.

Smuggler, you will really enjoy your BTS trans, especially climbing and towing in the Rockies.

Hopefully if you have gauges you will look at them and pull over before it starts puking fluid. Or get a 6.0 cooler and not worry about it, lol!!! you should still have a gauge, just to brag about your temps!
