I'm looking at purchasing a tranny cooler. Do I need one that has the thermal by-pass? Or does my truck already have one that will function with the aftermarket cooler? 2000 CC, auto.

Your truck already has a tranny cooler bypass. Cold ATF will bypass the tranny cooler(s) and return right back into the tranny. Hot ATF will go thru the coolers.

So any additional tranny cooler you add or replace should NOT include a bypass valve of any sort.

Smokey, I might be an exception. I installed the Tru-Cool Max and the temp would not register during the winter on long trips. I then added the thermal bypass. The temps would then register at about 110-120. During the warm weather were having so far the temps have not climbed past 185 pulling my trailer at 85 deg ambient. Empty at the same temps the trans will read 130.

Before the cooler I would hit 210 empty at 97 deg. and 255 pulling in extremely slow climbing conditions.

The thermal by pass was disassembled and inspected before I installed it because of your posts (I didn't want to add something you stated not to) and I wanted to understand a little more before I installed it. It's just an "H" configuration and the middle crossover is "partially" open when the oil is cold and fully closed when hot. The oil travels up the left side of the "H", passes through the cooler and returns down the right side of the "H" back to the trans. Just an explanation for those that are curious.

In cold climates you should use a thermal bypass on the additional cooler. The factory bypass is not thermal,it is a simple pressure valve. That valve is one of the primary reasons that you DO need a thermal valve on the second cooler. Smokey doesn't understand this. If you are replacing the stock cooler with something like the tru cool you don't need to install a thermal valve, but if you do it will still work just fine. If you are adding a second OTA cooler in series then you should use a thermal valve. Just understand that only the second cooler needs to be thermostatically controlled
