I just had my transmission pour our fluid after a 4 hour highway drive. Truck is a 1999 DRW CC with only 55k and has never done any heavy towing.

The trans never gave any warning and was shifting fine until I stopped and noticed the fluid. Repair shop tells me there is metal in the mix, the torque converter was off alignment and I need a bunch of other stuff (rebuild pack, solenoid, etc).

What I would like to know is if this is common for a low use low mileage trans to fail like this?

The tranny will puke out fluid if it has been over filled or get too hot. "Torque converter off alignment" New one on me.

I'd bet you topped off the tranny fluid before you left on this trip.

I would think the tranny was either overfilled, or the temp was over 200 degrees. I experienced this with a stock tranny, but had an autometer temp guage. Mine puked out fluid from the overflow at 210 degrees. I only had a MagHytec pan on the tranny, no additional cooler. It took awile to cool the tranny. The mechanic that is telling You need all this stuff, I think He is trying to empty Your wallet. I would suggest a good tranny cooler, a trucool max, or the 6.0 cooler. The tru cool max is about $140.00, the 6.0 around $300.00. I am not a fan of deeper tranny pans, all it does is hold more fluid.

Trans fluid was not topped off. The truck wasn't just spilling some fluid. It looked like someone pouring a bucket of fluid. I can't imagine the fluid being that hot. Can it get that hot just driving normal on the highway with no load and flat terrain? I am getting all of the parts back. Hopefully if they are trying to empty the wallet I'll be able to prove they lied (if they are lying).

I'm stuck now since the truck broke out of state. I will call BTS when I get the parts back and I will use them if it breaks again. If only I had access to a computer when it broke...darn!

Thanks,

Mark

Can you get a sample of your transmission oil??? With this sample you can have it tested and know (REALLY KNOW) if there are metal shavings or it got to hot. Then you can go to that "mechanic" and either thank him if he was right or make him pay for the parts if he was wrong.
Oh, something else I just though of, when I blew up an engine (long time ago!!) I could SEE the metal shavings in the oil. Did you look at the fluid and see any metal??? Maybe with transmissions, the metal will be smaller???

I seen them already push the front seal right out if the temp is up and the pressure is up Most of the time i seen this was when someone was backing a trailer up a hill.
